Language: adverbs
Adverbs tell us more about the verb. Some adverbs tell us how things happen. She ran quickly back to the village. The adverb ‘ quickly’ tells us how she ran. quickly = quick + ly Many adverbs end in ‘ly’. When we add ‘ly’ to a word ending in ‘y’ we change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’. The boy ate greedily .
• Speaking and listening: Tell students to pay attention to how they begin their retelling. They should use an appropriate opening phrase such as One day… or A long time ago… Students can go on to create a timeline showing the sequence of events. • Extension: Look at other stories to see how they begin. Sometimes stories start with startling statements to grab the reader’s attention. Give students the opportunity to rewrite stories they have read or heard.
