5 They looked at the fallen tree ____________. (sad) 6 They behaved ____________ and learnt a lesson. (bad) 7 His sister ____________ offered to help. (kind) 8 He ____________ dropped all the fruit on the ground. (clumsy)

Some adverbs tell us when things happen: tomorrow, before, after, soon or how often things happen: sometimes, often, usually, always, never. He went back often to the tree. Soon , his sister noticed.

3 Write four sentences of your own. Use one of these adverbs in each.

sometimes

usually

always

never

• Remind students about spelling changes when adding ‘-ly’. If the adjective ends in ‘e’ add ‘ly’ (nice/nicely) but if the adjective ends in ‘le’, remove ‘le’ and add ‘ly’ (gentle/gently). • Some adverbs have the same form as the adjective: early, fast, hard, high, late, near. This is hard work. He is working hard.
