How to use the training contract regional indexes and directory

Solicitors’ regional indexes These tables are designed to allow you to shortlist firms by particular criteria. Further information about each firm is contained within the training contract directory. The tables detail: • the number of annual vacancies at the firm (unless a particular year has been specified); • the number of partners (which generally includes equity and salaried partners) and total staff; • whether work placement schemes are available; and • up to five general practice and 19 specialisation work areas. Firms that claim to have an office in a particular region are listed from A to Z in the appropriate regional table. For the purposes of the indexes we have used the 10 standard economic planning regions of Great Britain (not including Scotland), and London is dealt with separately. There is also a table for the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, and an international table. Please note, the following abbreviations have been used for the specialisation work areas: • ‘Banking’ refers to Banking and finance; • ‘Property’ refers to Commercial property; and • ‘Comp/comm’ refers to Company/ commercial. It should be noted that the information has been provided by the firms themselves and has generally not been verified by us. We do not, therefore, claim that the information is fully accurate and comprehensive, only that it can be used as a starting point for shortlisting appropriate firms. Furthermore, although we have attempted to contact every firm that is authorised to provide training contracts, not all firms that take trainees have supplied their details.

Training contract directory The directory contains contact information and a brief practice description for all firms that are authorised to offer training contracts by the SRA and have supplied us with their details. It is therefore an essential reference guide to firms that offer work placement schemes, training contracts and funding. The basic entry includes the firm’s application address (not necessarily its main office), telephone number, email address, the applications contact and a brief description of the firm, together with the number of vacancies per year (unless a particular year is specified), the number of current trainees, partners and total staff, and whether the firm offers work placement schemes. Firms with a more detailed directory entry appear in bold in the regional indexes. Every effort has been made to collate accurate information from all firms that are authorised to provide training contracts and we are confident that the directory is the most comprehensive of its kind. However, as LCNH is published in October and firms may change their information at any point, we recommend that you double check key information on firms’ own websites. Deadlines can also be checked on www.LawCareers.Net. These resources should be used in conjunction with the section on law firm practice areas, which features in-depth interviews with numerous solicitors who are keen to pass on their advice about making it in the legal profession.
