The Bar Council

International opportunities The Bar Council promotes the Bar overseas and facilitates introductions and networking opportunities at a wide range of events. It has also sought to encourage and assist members of the Bar in developing, strengthening and maintaining their international practice. Always supporting barristers Throughout a barrister’s career, the Bar Council is there to provide support and services specifically for the Bar. The Bar Council provides an Ethical Enquiries Service, which includes a helpline and the Ethics and Practice Hub devoted solely to ethics and practice guides. These help barristers to meet their obligations in the regulator’s (the Bar Standards Board) handbook and provide best practice on a range of topics including IT, anti-money laundering and even how to deal with enquiries from the media. The Ethical Enquiries helpline provides confidential guidance on ethical problems that barristers may face in the course of their work and is managed by a specially trained team. The Bar Council also operates a confidential Equality and Diversity Helpline, advising barristers (including pupils), clerks and practice managers on regulatory and statutory equality duties, as well as on best practice. As well as practice-focused support, the Bar Council provides access to a wide range of services such as accountancy, financial planning, insurance and healthcare, many of which are tailored to barristers’ needs and often at a competitive rate. In addition, discounts on goods, including barristers’ court attire, stationery and laptops, are negotiated by the Bar Council with suppliers so that barristers can benefit from reduced prices. Students who pay the student Bar Representation Fee (BRF) of £24 per year can access these services. If you would like

to pay the student BRF or talk to someone about the benefits, please contact the services team on 020 7611 1329 or email: services@barcouncil. org.uk. BarTalk In addition to the information provided on theBar Council’swebsite (www.barcouncil.org.uk), the Bar Council provides regular updates about the work it is doing on behalf of theBar through its fortnightly e-newsletter, BarTalk. To subscribe toBarTalk, email: bartalk@barcouncil.org.uk. Voice of the Bar Without the Bar Council, the Bar’s collective voice would not be heard inWhitehall, Westminster, or on the international stage. It has led onmajor campaigns that go to the heart of the justice system in England andWales, as well as in other jurisdictions, such as protecting the independence of the judiciary, tackling the backlog of court cases, and challenging cuts to legal aid and international human rights and rule of law violations.
