How to use the pupillage index and directory
Barristers’ index These tables are designed to allow you to shortlist sets of chambers by particular criteria. Further information about each set is contained within the pupillage directory. The tables detail: • the main location of the set; • the number of annual pupillages at the set; • the number of tenants and tenancies offered in the past three years; • whether mini-pupillages are available; • whether the set uses the Pupillage Gateway application system; and • 19 specialisation work areas. It should be noted that the information has been provided by the chambers themselves and has generally not been verified by us. We do not, therefore, claim that the information is fully accurate and comprehensive, only that it can be used as a starting point for shortlisting appropriate sets. Furthermore, although we have attempted to contact every recruiting chambers, some have not returned information and are therefore absent. Barristers’ directory The directory contains contact information and a brief practice description for all chambers that have provided information. It is therefore an essential reference guide to chambers that offer pupillages and mini-pupillages. The basic entry includes an application address, telephone number, email address, the applications procedure (Pupillage Gateway or own system) and a brief description of the set, together with the number of pupillages per year, the number of tenants, the number of new tenants in the last three years and whether the set offers mini- pupillages. Those chambers that have a more detailed directory entry appear in bold in the regional indexes.
These resources should be used in conjunction with the section on the Bar practice areas, which features in-depth interviews with numerous barristers who are keen to pass on their advice about making it in the legal profession.
