What did you do while on the vacation scheme? There were a variety of tasks I could try, from research-based tasks, memo drafting and presenting to partners and associates. As the vacation scheme was designed to reflect the firm’s non-rotational training contract, I had the opportunity to seek out work from the lawyers and practice areas that interested me. This meant that my experience felt very authentic. I enjoyed spending time with a senior lawyer pitching a potential client of my choice. This really tested my commercial awareness, which is an important part of being a successful lawyer. There was also a negotiation workshop, which involved working in groups to advance our fictional client’s position. Lawyers gave us tips on how to negotiate effectively and we had the chance to prove we have the skills to make a well-rounded lawyer, such as teamwork and effective communication. Aside from the work, there were social elements too, including ice skating at Somerset House and a dinner – it was great to chat with a mixture of trainees, associates and partners in a relaxed setting. What did you feel that you gained from the placement? It was great to experience the Jones Day culture on a day-to-day basis, particularly how the non-rotational system really works in practice. Until you take part in a scheme, you have an abstract idea of what it might be like, but the experience I gained on the scheme gave me a clear picture of the benefits of this distinctive way of training, and confirmed that Jones Day was the firm for me. I also built a network across all levels of the firm; from partners to trainees, and my vacation scheme cohort. Which were the most enjoyable – and most challenging – aspects of the scheme? The non-rotational system was both the most enjoyable and challenging aspect. I was required to be proactive to introduce myself, which was daunting at first. However, once I had experienced the process and saw first-hand how approachable the lawyers were, I then had the independence to pursue the work I was interested in and look for a variety of experiences across multiple practice areas, something that just wouldn’t happen in a typical ‘seat’ system. Did the scheme end with a training contract interview or some other kind of further recruitment process? I was assessed on all aspects of the scheme, with particular focus on the work I completed. I was able to discuss my experience so far at the mid-scheme interview with two senior lawyers where I was given feedback to carry through to the second week. It was helpful to understand how I could make the most of my time at the firm. Is there one key thing that you took away from the experience that you would pass on as advice to others? Take on board the advice from trainees and the recruitment team, be keen to learn and stay engaged. But more specifically, I think it’s important to show your growth across the scheme. Try to learn from what you’re doing, engage with the feedback you’re given and demonstrate this growth. Alongside this, take all the opportunities you are given both relating to work and connecting with members of the firm.
