JULY 10 "He is our help and our shield’’ (Psa. 33:20). Let your company be according to your clothing. Live in the courts of the Great King, behold His face, wait at His throne, bear His name, show forth His virtues, set forth His praises, advance His honor, and uphold His interests. Live by faith in the power of the Spirit, in the beauty of holiness, in the hope of the gospel, in the joy o f your God, in the magnificence, and yet the humility of the children of the Great King. The state of Christians in this life is a militant state, but whatever their dangers or their fears are, here’s sufficient provision made against all—God is their shield. Whatever assaults are made, thy God is a wall of partition between thee and harm. — A. B. S im pson . . JULY 11 "The Lord is thy keeper [Jehovah Shomer]’’ (Psa. 121:5). Jehovah Shomer! What a store of pre serving, keeping, guarding grace is con veyed by that name! Thy foot, thy hand, thy soul; thy going out and thy coming in ; kept from all evil, by day and by night, from this time forth and even fop ever more: Is not that a name to meet the Christian’s need, a name worth trusting and proving, and the proving of which will bring glory to the God who thus names Himself for His people, and verifies His name in their trusting lives? ■—H ubert B rooke . The condition is, “as we forgive our debtors”—-a wonderful word, let us not weaken its force— forgive us our debts, as we forgive every one that is indebted to us. Can you offer, can you honestly pre sent the Lord’s prayer? Can you accept that condition, as we 'forgive our debtors ? Remember, it is the condition, and you are not at liberty to change it, and take any other— “as we forgive.” Do you forgive? Do you forgive every one? Do you for give with all your heart? . . . People some times ask how far we go in our teaching of holiness. My answer is, just as far as the Lord’s prayer goes—nothing less than that, and nothing farther. — J. E lder C u m m in g . JULY 13 “He will guide us into all truth” (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit is promised to us as our personal Guide in the path of life. Let us notice some of the conditions and prin ciples of divine guidance. The first is a surrendered spirit. Next, there must be a readiness to obey. He will not give us light unless we mean to follow it. Then we must trust His guidance. We must believe that He is with us and directing us. We must lean upon His arm with all our heart, and implicitly look up into His face and ex pect Him to be true to us. . . . We shall have to learn also to walk with Him when we cannot understand the way. “Through waves and clouds and storms He gently clears thy way; Wait then His time, so shall thy night Soon end in glorious day.” —A. B. S im pson . Take the name o f Jesus ev.er, As a shield from every snare; If temptations round you gather, Breathe that holy name in prayer. — L illian B axter . JULY 12 “A s we forgive our debtors” (Matt. 6:12).

JULY 14 "A s fo r me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15). The family circle—this is the first place where the influence of an individual life should be seen and felt. It has been well said that “private life governs the world,” for when God is honored in the family, He wijl be honored in the nation, which is built up of families. . . . Never will one father forget the words of his boy as they were climbing a Scottish mountain, with the father some little distance ahead. He heard his son from close behind call: “ Choose the safe path, Father, I am com ing after you!” The influence o f Christ in the family will always be such that the children will be early taught the elemen tary truths of the gospel and placed in the Saviour’s hands in loving trust. They will be daily enabled to see the reality of the gospel in the lives of their parents, so that they will need no other evidences of its power. — W. H. G riffith T h om as . JULY 15 “ Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son o f her womb? Yea, they may fo r get, yet will 1 not forget thee” (Isa. 49:15). It is very striking that the very earliest picture o f God, back in that first page of Genesis, is a picture of a brooding mother. As the language reads underneath, “The Spirit of God was brooding, tremulous with mother-love, instinct with life upon the riotous waste of the waters.” You re member how Jesus, when He was weeping the bitter, acrid tears o f a broken heart over traitor Jerusalem, said, “How often would I have gathered you”—it is very homely talk; you would hesitate to use it of yourselves, but you are free to repeat it—“as a hen in the barnyard her brood.” God is a mother in His heart, in His think ing about each one of us. Only the word means more to Him than it ever does to me.—S. D. G ordon . JULY 16 “ A t the commandment o f the Lord, the children of. Israel journeyed, and at the commandment o f the Lord they pitched : as long as the cloud abode upon the taber nacle they rested in their tents” (Num. 9:18). We cannot ponder too deeply the les sons of the cloud given in the exquisite picture-lesson on guidance in Numbers 9: 15-23. Let us look high enough for guid ance. Let us encourage our soul to wait only upon God, till it is given. Let us cul tivate that meekness which He will guide in judgment. Let us seek to be of quick understanding, that we may be apt to see the least sign of His will. Let us stand with girded loins and lighted lamps, that we may be prompt to obey. Blessed are those servants! They shall be led by a right way to the golden city of the saints. — F. B. M eyer . JULY 17 “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God” (Acts 16:25). Whgn I approach Victoria Station on the Southern Railway, I always look out for a signal box that stands there in the great network o f lines. The rails go round on either side, leaving a little triangle in the center. That signalman must be a lover of flowers, for you will see that he has transformed that little plot of ground into a garden . . . There are the great locomo tives hurtling by, and the dust, and the steam, and the noise. Yes, but in the midst
