an environment yet to b e ; I long for Thy Spirit, O Lord, and thereby I know that Thou too longest for me. — G eorge M atheson . JULY 29 “ Rejoice ever more” (1 Thess. 5:16). There is the joy o f deliverance from overwhelming danger. This was the joy o f the Jews when their adversary perished, and Mordecai was exalted (Esth. 8:16). Such shall be the church’s joy in the morn ing of her great deliverance. There is the joy of escape from captivity and return from exile, such as made Israel feel “as men that dream.” Such shall be the church’s joy when her long captivity is done (Psa. 126:2). There is the joy of harvest (Isa. 9:3) ; and such shall be the church’s joy. There is the mother’s joy when her pangs are over, and the child is born into the world (John 16:20). With such joy shall we rejoice, and our joy no man taketh from us. The joy in reserve for us is manifold and large; it will abide and satisfy; it is the joy o f the morning, a long glad day before us (Rev. 22:5). — H oratius B onar . JULY 30 “ There shall be no more curse" (Rev. 22:3). Often through blinding tears, we are forced to admit it: The curse is on every thing. Sin brands deeply; it were foolish ness to deny it. By one man sin entered, and death by sin—death that knows no favorites. But by Another—oh, bless God 1 —sin has been atoned for, death has been conquered, salvation has been provided, and an entrance into a glorious habitation has been assured. In Christ, the curse has been lifted. Dry your tears, dear sorrow ing one, and reach forth the hand of faith to appropriate all that has been provided. You may have by faith today what you will enjoy by sight tomorrow.— S elected . It says in the Bible—one beautiful verse— That in heaven (praise G od!) there shall be “no more curse” ; No earthquake, no famine, no stormy wind blowing: And that’s where I’m going, o h ! that’s where I’m going! It says that up there in that land of the skies, The Saviour will wipe every tear from our eyes; That the river of life keeps flowing and flowing: And that’s where I’m going, o h ! that’s where I’m going! — R obert C rum ly . JULY 31 “Except a corn o f wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit" (John 12:24). Are you willing to be crucified? Are you willing to die? If you are not, you are no good. You can do nothing until you are dead. “Except a corn o f wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone, but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” So said the Master. He was the soil-less seed in the garner o f heaven, and we are the seedless soil, poor fallen hu manity ; and He was willing to be sown in our flesh that He might bring forth the redeemed to people heaven. And we, fol lowing in His steps, must die unto sin, if we would be raised to newness o f life and share the glory which He has prom ised.— B ishop T aylor S m it h .

JULY 25 "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" (Col. 2:9 ). A big lump of something—a stone sup posedly—lay for centuries in a shallow, limpid brook in North Carolina. People passing that way saw only an ugly lump, and passed on. A poor man passing one day saw a heavy lump —a good thing to hold his door ajar—and he took it home. A geologist who stopped at the poor man’s door one day saw a lump o f gold —the biggest lump of gold ever found east of the Rockies. Many people looked upon Jesus. Some saw only a Galilean peasant, and turned away. Some saw a prophet, and stopped to listen. Some saw the Messiah, and worshiped. Some saw the Lamb of God, and looked to Him to save them from their sins .. .When you look at Jesus, what do you see? (-r-S u N D A Y SCHOOL T lM E S . JULY 26 “Many there be who say o f my soul, There is no help fo r him in God" (Psa. 3:2 ). That is the last and deadliest arrow in Satan’s quiver . . . When any thought comes to you and says, “ There is no help for you in God,” that messenger has shown the cloven hoof. He has not only done it, but he has overdone it. It is not true. Then let these voices be the voices o f so many liars unto you. When they say, “ There is no help in Absalom,” quite right; when they say, “Ahithophel has turned treacherous,” I do not doubt it ; “ Shimei is cursing you,” perfectly true; when they say, “You are an old hypocrite,” quite right; but when they say, “ God has cast you off,” get thee behind me, Satan! It is a lie. Worse than I am is the voice that would dare to speak against the faithfulness of my Redeemer, God. “He abideth faithful.” — J ohn M c N eill . JULY 27 “ The pure in heart" (Matt. 5:8). When we talk of a cleansed heart, we mean a cleansed mind, cleansed desires, a cleansed will, or a loyal will. Is not that possible? Surely it is. The Lord can pur ify your thoughts and keep them pure; the Lord can purify your affections and emo tions and desires and keep them pure; and the Lord can set your will right and keep it loyal. Moment by moment He can keep it, and it is the attitude o f dependence that is needed, moment by moment. But if you are careless, you may lose it! Remember that. Now there is liberty. Liberty comes with the knowledge o f the truth: “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Liberty comes with the recep tion of divine power. . . And liberty comes with the cleansed heart. “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall God.” — E van H . H opkins . JULY 28 " / will pour water, upon him that is thirsty" (Isa. 44:3). My qualification for being made divine is my thirstiness, my sense of want. My love is the thirst of my heart. My aspira tion is the thirst of my fancy. My prayer is the thirst of my spirit. I am a hundle of longings, and my longings are all proph ecies. . . . Why do I not sing through the world as the bird sings through the firma ment? It is because the firmament is the bird’s environment; the world is not my environment. If it were, I too would sing. But there is that within me which is not met by aught around me. My intellect is not filled with its knowledge, nor my heart with its love. My thirst is the prophecy of
