The Jack Wyrtzen Story By George Sweeting

Dr. Unger discussed the Dead Sea Scrolls and their impact on New Tes tament studies. A number of parallels are to be discerned between John the Baptist and the Qumran community of the Scrolls. The Gospel texts are illuminated by a number of similari ties in the Scrolls. It is the Messianic aspect of Jesus, however, that comes most sharply into focus. The Messiah of the Scrolls, or rather two Messiahs, involve features that Jesus combined in His own person and work. A late dating of John’s Gospel is held in consistent with discoveries among Cop tic manuscripts in Egypt.

One of the most vigorous evangelis tic programs in the country today is that of the Word of Life ministry, of which Jack Wyrtzen is the moving power. After a miraculous conversion as a young man, Jack was challenged by the Lord with a world vision, and dedicated himself particularly to the winning of young people to the Lord. Radio ministry, public rallies, includ ing great Saturday night meetings, and an extensive camp program pro vided the vehicles through which God uses His servant. The ministry has gone on to international scenes, par ticularly in Latin America. The story is a chronicle in evangelism and a source of spiritual challenge and per sonal re-evaluation. 151 pages; paper over boards; Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids; $2.50. Those who have used Dr. Unger’s companion volume on Old Testament archaeology will appreciate the op portunity to add this volume to their libraries. While there is not the same situation in respect to archaeology in the New Testament period, there is nonetheless a surprising number of areas in which discoveries have con tributed to our knowledge and under standing of the New Testament. It deals, of course, with a much shorter span of history, although it was an important period in many respects. One of the most important contri butions has been the establishment of the fact that the language of the New Testament was the language of the people. Classical Greek was the language of the wealthy and the cul tured. It would not do for the com mon man. Koine Greek, as it is called, was the language of commerce, tra vel, and world communication be tween 300 B. C. and A. D. 330. The story of how this fact itself was es tablished is an interesting one, in volving a crocodile cemetary in Egypt, where many manuscripts were found as wrappings or stuffing for sacred crocodile mummies.
