to seamen

A s a S c a n d in a v ia n ship docks in the busy San Francisco harbor, almost immediately, be it day or night, the Rev. Thorbjorn Olsen is on his way to contact the entire crew for Christ. Through the years, this dedicated servant and his wife have carried on the unique ministry of making more than 1,200 annual vis its to ships and hospitals, distribut ing literature and giving counsel and prayer fellowship. This distinct service is rendered through the Scandinavian Seamen’s Mission. Established in 1947, the Mission is financed by funds from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, as well as from contributions o f various churches and individuals here in the United States. Rev. Mr. Olsen, in addition to meeting the ships, invites seamen to his home for further fellowship, re freshment and spiritual guidance. Many of the seamen are young men in their middle and late teens. Mrs. Olsen acts as hostess o f the Mission, taking care o f the 16-room house, serving meals and snacks, and help ing the seamen to purchase gifts for their families and friends. She en courages the men to write to their loved ones at home. Countless letters o f appreciation to the Olsens are received from families o f the sea men in their native lands. More than 6,000 meals were served at the Mis sion last year not including those for the family itself or for personal visitors. Approximately 300 gatherings are held each year at the Mission, with visitors numbering well over 10,000. Last year more than 4,000 Christ mas presents were given out to the various men. The work is doubtless best sum marized in the words o f two Nor wegian sailors who wrote, “ The last time we were here and heard your message, you gave us something to think about. Tonight, after hearing your sermon, seeing the way you treat the seamen, and after receiv ing your Christmas gifts, both o f us have decided to accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Saviour. When we return to Nor way, we plan to join the church and serve the Lord there.” THE KING'S BUSINESS
