The Alleynian 702 2014

The ski-racing team enjoyed two trips this year, to Canada and Switzerland, with Louis Wright and Fernando De La Infiesta both coming away with Bronze medals. The outstanding achievement of the year, however, goes to Angus Wills, who won the overall English under-16 title at the English Alpine Ski Championships in Bormio, Italy. The rise of Basketball at Dulwich College must also be acknowledged. Under Clive Sinclair and Mr Burdekin, record numbers of boys have been attending training sessions and this resulted in all four age-group teams making the play-off finals of their respective LISBA competitions, with the U19s and the U16s being crowned Champions on two magical nights at Dulwich. The U15s and U14s finished second and third and will be hoping to emulate their elders next year. Both in and on the water, boys have continued to impress, with their dedication to training and desire to do well clear for all to see. The Boat Club had another successful year, with nearly 150 boys taking part. The 1st

XIII finished fifth at the National Schools Head, but a disappointing defeat to Pangbourne saw them bow out at Henley on the first day. This year, they will hope for a better performance as they finished ninth in the Schools Head. The J15s will also be hoping to finish the year on a high as they look to build on their win at the National Sculling Head and second-placed finish at the Schools Head. James Redshaw and Jasper Freeman won the Nick Prosser Trophy at the National Sailing Championships last June, with Ben Taffs and Charlie Dee also on fine form. Swimming has seen a great year, with the Junior School qualifying for the Grand Final in the schools league for the first time, and a clean sweep in all age groups against Harrow in our inter-school annual event brought a huge smile from Miss Palmer. Individually, Julian Chan Quee Lin competed out of age at the British championships and made the finals for the 400-metre and 200-metre freestyle. He also retained his freestyle and Individual Medley titles in the county and regional competitions. Max Tidmarsh gained medals in a number of events at both the county and regional championships and is nearing his national qualifying time. Ethan Staunton competed in both the county and regional championships. The strength of the swimming programme is clearly benefitting Water Polo as the U18s reached the South Final and the U16s were national plate final winners. The U15s won the schools league cup and the U14s reached the National semi-final. Following these performances, Isaac Edey, Buzz Robb and Ethan Staunton were selected for the Great Britain talent squad. These three,

plus Nick Corbett, Richard De Rome, Leo Pashov, Jamie Gulland, Josh Gooding and Noah Cooper have all been selected to represent London. In March, six boys from Years 11 to 13 accompanied Mr Rayner to ‘The Reach’ indoor climbing centre at Woolwich to take part in the Independent Schools Climbing Competition. The senior team was placed third overall, our highest-ever finish in the competition. Special congratulations should also go to Sacha Salamon White in Year 12, who was the outright winner of the Senior Boys’ Top Roping Category, an outstanding achievement. Tennis continues to be very popular, with success in a number of competitions and great participation numbers amongst the boys at a recreational level. It is principally played in the summer term; however, the elite squads have the
