Alexis Colenso

Alex joined the Design & Technology Department in September 2009 having come from Culford School in Suffolk, where he additionally taught sport and was heavily involved in Boarding. During his four years at Dulwich, he continued these additional commitments, being a visiting House Tutor in the Orchard and successfully coaching our Middle and Upper School rugby. He also actively supported the rowing and cricket squads and joined the boys on the First XV tour to Australia in 2010. As the ‘Gentle Giant’ of the Design and Technology team, he nurtured boys from years 7 to 13 and successfully introduced, the now well-established, Lower School Engineering Day. In September 2011, he was appointed Second in Department with responsibility for Key Stage 4 and health and safety and went on to organise numerous trips and mentor boys for the Arkwright Scholarship Award. Alex left to take up a position as inaugural Housemaster of the 11-18 Mixed Alleyn House at Dulwich College in Suzhou. All of us in the department wish him, his wife Gabby and his son Nathan every success in the next chapter of their lives in the Dulwich College family of schools.

Melissa joined Dulwich College in 2008 as second in charge of the English department. The years since have seen a great deal of changes in the department, but Melissa’s kindness and level-headedness remained a constant. A talented and inspirational teacher, her enthusiasm and expertise were outstanding. An example of her creative approach was her choice to bring a study of Moll Flanders and the poetry of Anne Sexton to the A-level curriculum, allowing students to explore these fascinating and demanding texts, and the important and challenging issues that they raise, at an advanced standard and in a supportive environment. She presided over Debating and saw it go from strength to strength, with boys achieving national recognition and success and took an active role as a mentor in the department. During her last two years, she studied for a Masters in Literature at Birkbeck College, taking on this challenge at the same time as fulfilling her management role and teaching a demanding timetable. Her fascinating final dissertation, examining the use of dialogue in the novels of Don Delillo, brought her a well-earned distinction. She takes up a post as Head of English at Colfe’s School; her talents will make her a valued asset there.
