The Alleynian 702 2014

T he boys of the Junior School excelled themselves throughout this year’s Great Hall Concert, leaving the audience in no doubt that the quality of music in this section of the College is very high indeed. The Purcell Ensemble began the concert with an enthusiastic performance of Anita Hewitt-Jones’ ‘Whirligig’, and this was followed by a confident and rousing performance by the Percussion Ensemble. The group’s ‘Samba’ was full of energy and the improvised solos were great fun, too. Joshua Theaker followed with an assured performance on the French Horn, demonstrating impressive attention to detail and excellent musicianship. The Junior Guitar Ensemble and The Wind Band both shone in their performances, working effectively to produce wonderful harmonies. A real highlight of the evening, however, was the Madrigal Choir’s stunning singing of Allan Naplan’s ‘Al Shlosha’. The sound was beautiful and quite mesmerising, filling the heights of the Great Hall. Following this Ebube Chiana, Isaac Shaw and Alasdair Howell performed Bach’s ‘Trio in F’ with confidence and good musicality. Finally, Year 5 ended the evening with more strong singing, bringing to the end of the concert the energy with which it had begun.

J UN I OR SCHOOL CONCERT

GREAT HA L L MR AL EX MAT THEWS T he 50th Lunchtime Concert at the Chapel was a joint concert between the three Foundation Schools, JAGS, Alleyn’s and Dulwich, showcasing musical talent from each school. The concert was a celebration of this significant milestone, and each school provided one third of the performers: two players each in the Sextets and a joint choir. The first item on the programme was two movements from the ‘Sextet for Piano and Winds’ by Gordon Jacob, an Old Alleynian. This was performed stylishly and with conviction, and the melodic lines flowed smoothly in the slow movement. The fast movement was exciting and vibrant, and the group demonstrated an extensive dynamic range with great effect. The next item was the first movement of the String Sextet No. 1 by Brahms. The ensemble was very well balanced, with sensitive pizzicato and long vocal melodies. The emotion of this piece was brought across very well, as well as impressive technical finesse. Finally, two choral pieces were sung by the joint choir. The first piece was ‘Cantate Domino’ by Pitoni, sung with fine conviction and clarity under the leadership of Mr Tim Kermode, Director of Music at Alleyn’s.
