A dental practice is only as good as the experience it creates for its patients. You could be the most talented dentist in the world, but if you focus only on skill, you’re missing the full picture. Dentistry isn’t just about filling cavities. It’s about making patients feel comfortable, listened to, and cared for. At Gardens Dental Care, every member of our team takes pride in creating the best possible experience for our patients. From welcoming you to the practice like an old friend to offering you some headphones to make your time in the chair a little more relaxing, we take every measure we can to ensure that making a trip to the dentist doesn’t feel like pulling teeth — even if that’s exactly what’s happening. I’m under no illusions about how many people feel about the dentist. It’s never going to be like going to Disney World, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t put in the effort to make it as enjoyable as it can be. Many people feel anxious about the dentist. Instead of ignoring these fears, we want to acknowledge them and use the information to build a better experience. As we near the grand opening of our expansion, including the new surgical suite, we’re proud to be able to offer sedation dentistry. We’ve always offered the option of nitrous oxide, and now we’re increasing our suite of sedation options. I’m one of the few dentists in our area to be certified in conscious sedation. This method involves giving the patient some medication to make their experience less stressful. They’ll still be alert and able to respond to commands and answer questions, but they’ll be much more relaxed. In some cases, they may not even remember sitting in the chair at all. For more intensive procedures, we’ll also be offering deep sedation. This type of sedation will be limited to intensive procedures that would normally require multiple visits. It will be administered by a dental anesthesiologist. Most patients will never need deep sedation, but we will offer it for the cases in which it is optimal. Our goal in offering sedation dentistry is to encourage people who would otherwise avoid the dentist to come in, worry-free. Anxiety shouldn’t keep anyone from receiving the benefits of oral care. When people realize there are ways to make the dental experience less stressful, they are more likely to get the great treatment everyone deserves. Education is another useful tool for alleviating the anxiety that comes from not understanding what your dentist or hygienist is doing. We explain our procedures to patients in order to demystify them. The more a patient knows about the procedure they’re receiving, the less nervous they feel. That said, we know these methods aren’t enough to put everyone totally at ease. That’s why I’m so excited to be able to offer the latest and safest sedation methods to our patients, old and new. –Dr. David Yates Dentistry Isn’t Just About Skill It’s About Caring for People

YOUR DINNER TABLE MIGHT BE THE KEY

to a Happier Family

The family dinner is a staple of years gone by. These days, the only time you see a family sit together and break bread seems to be at Thanksgiving. This is a shame, because regular family dinners are incredibly important! It’s a time to bond with your loved ones that can have a positive impact on your kids’ lives. A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that kids who regularly partake in family meals are less likely to experience depression or engage in drug use. Furthermore, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University determined that kids who eat family meals five to seven times a week bring home better report cards. Even when schedules are busy, you can make family dinners fit into your agenda with these tips. BE FLEXIBLE ABOUT MEALTIMES Dinner doesn’t have to be at 6 p.m. on the dot. If Kamala has a karate tournament in the evening or Peter needs to stay late at school for art club, why not break out the healthy snacks and make dinner happen a little later or earlier? Plus, the meal you share as a family doesn’t have to be at dinnertime. If there’s time in the mornings, sit down for breakfast. If you have the opportunity on weekends or during a school break, grab lunch together. CALL ALL HANDS ON DECK Mom or Dad shouldn’t be expected to cook by themselves for every meal. This is family time, after all, so call in the kids! Make sure their tasks are age-appropriate — leave sautéing vegetables to the high schooler and let your first-grader set out the cups instead. This is the Although April Fools’ Day has been celebrated for centuries by cultures across the world, the holiday’s origin is unclear. Historians point to a variety of possible beginnings, but the only solid conclusion is that the April Fools’ Day we know today is a blend of traditions. THE GREGORIAN CALENDAR In 1582, France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. Some people were slow to get the news, and others failed to recognize that the start of the year had moved from April 1 to Jan. 1. Those who celebrated during the last week of March became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. People would place paper fish on the backs of March celebrators and refer to them as “poisson d’avril,” referencing a young, easily caught fish, which symbolized a gullible person. HILARIA Other historians have linked April Fools’ Day to the ancient Roman festival Hilaria, which was celebrated at the end of March. The festival honored Cybele, a mother of gods, and celebrations included parades, masquerades, and jokes to honor the vernal equinox, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. FOOLED AGAIN

perfect opportunity to teach kids valuable kitchen skills and to take some of the burden off your plate. Plus, if your kids are picky eaters, inviting them to be part of the cooking process can make them more inclined to try the finished product. DON’T STRESS YOURSELF OUT It’s okay if you’re too busy on a Monday to cook dinner. There’s always Tuesday. Or you can take a trip to your favorite family restaurant. Family meals should be fun, and that can’t happen if you’re stressed. Don’t feel pressured to make each meal perfect or to prepare a three-course dinner every night. Chicken and rice can get the job done as long as you’re all sitting around the table as a family. No matter how hectic your schedule may be, making family meals a priority is always worth the investment. One great way to eat healthy without breaking the bank or throwing out food is to try a meal kit delivery service. Dr. Yates and his wife swear by Hello Fresh, but there are many options. Do your research and choose the service that’s best for your family

The History of April Fools’ Day

‘CANTERBURY TALES’ Another origin story, though very controversial, comes from Geoffrey Chaucer’s 1392 book, “The Canterbury Tales.”There are still questions about whether Chaucer really wrote the stories and whether they have any direct link to April Fools’ Day. In the book, Chaucer describes the date “32 March.” Some believe this was a joke, because March 32 doesn’t exist, but some medievalists insist it was a misprint. April Fools’ Day certainly has murky origins. Whether our traditions come from the Gregorian calendar switch, Hilaria, or even “The Canterbury Tales,”we can all enjoy our chance to let loose and play pranks on our friends and family at least one day each year.

Electric or Manual?

Perks of a Powered Toothbrush

MORE COMFORT If you have arthritis or dexterity difficulties, an electric toothbrush’s ability to vibrate on its own removes some of the pressure from your hands, making brushing a more comfortable and manageable experience. IMPROVED EFFICIENCY An electric toothbrush can move much more quickly and precisely than your hand alone, so you’ll be able to cover more surface area in the same amount of time and potentially remove more plaque. An electric toothbrush also discourages brushing too hard — the extra pressure on the brush will make the vibrations noisy and uncomfortable. If you’re looking for an electric brush, you’ll find a wide range of options, from SoniCare and Oral B’s standard products to Quip’s sleek, stylish subscription-based model. Oral-B’s Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Power Toothbrush line recently became the first electric toothbrush to receive the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Most electric toothbrushes are rechargeable and have removable tops that you can change every few months as the bristles start to wear.

You know brushing your teeth for twominutes twice a day is essential tomaintaining your oral health. What’s open tomore debate, though, is which tool is better at cleaning your teeth: manual or mechanical brushes? The American Dental Association (ADA) states that both manual and powered toothbrushes are effective at removing plaque. But other clinical trials suggest positive results for people who switched to electric brushes. When the ADA surveyed 16,000 patients who’d replaced their manual with mechanical brushes, over 80 percent reported improved oral cleanliness. While the debate has yet to be settled, you might personally enjoy some of the added features of an electric toothbrush. TIMED BRUSHING Most electric toothbrushes have timers, which encourage you to brush for a set amount of time, usually two minutes. When you press the power button, the toothbrush begins to vibrate and will continue to vibrate for two minutes. This feature takes out the guesswork and makes it easy to brush your teeth for the recommended time. For children who try to get out of brushing at every chance, the timer can turn brushing into more of a game and less of a chore.

So, what’s the bottom line? Ask the team at Gardens Dental Care. We can recommend in-office and over-the-counter treatments.
