Object Lesson P at , a P roud P otato

Object: A sprouting . potato. (It not available, the same effect can be obtained by inserting several pieces of crooked maca roni in a potato.) Lesson: What is the matter with this potato ? “It is sprouting.” Yes, it should have been planted long ago, and then these sprouts would have been doing some good. This potato is so much like a person that it should have a real name. Since it is an Irish potato, don’t you think “Pat” would be a good name for it? Pat has wasted his life, and he is now neither fit to be eaten nor good to plant. Perhaps he was too proud to be planted in the cold dark earth. He chose rather to waste his life in the sunlight. We think it silly of a potato to be so proud that it does not do the thing God intended it should do. That is not nearly so bad as it is for people to be so proud that they do not do the things God wants them to. Outline and Exposition I. T he P erson of the S ervant (1) H ERE is “the beginning of the gos pel,” not the beginning of the his tory of Christ the Servant—though of course the only history that we possess concerning His life on earth is found in the four Gospels. Commenting on the words “Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (v. 1), C. R. Erdman says that “the name, or combination of names, is peculiar to Mark. Jesus is the human name and speaks of the salvation of God (cf. Matt. 1:21). Christ is the Messianic name speaking of the anointed One, Prophet, Priest, and King. The Son of God is the divine name telling of Deity in human flesh.” (The teacher would do well to secure a copy of Dr. Erdman’s little book, The Gospel of Mark. It is small in compass but large in teaching value. From the Biola Book Room it may be obtained for $1.00 a copy.) We should remember always that Christ the Servant is the Servant of Jehovah rather than of man; His service for man is merely the manifestation of His service for Jehovah. II. T he I ntroduction of the S ervant (2-8) The purpose of John the Baptist was to prepare the way for the coming of the Servant (vs. 2, 3). John’s place of minis try was in the wilderness (vs. 4-6). This locale was appropriate because of what John was—an Old Testament prophet— the last of them, and there was at that time no room for such witnesses within the Golden Text: “Prepare ye the way the Lord” (Mk. 1:3).

When Jesus Christ was on earth, He found pride, even among His disciples. In Mark 10:35 and 37 we read that James and John came unto Him, saying: “Mas ter, . . . Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.” The Lord Jesus knew that these broth ers were proud and had the wrong idea of true greatness. He told them: “Who soever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be min istered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:43-45). Christ wants His followers to be like Him, ministering to the needs of others, instead of being like Pat, the proud potato, who failed to do what God wanted. city of the great king. The wilderness was John’s proper place also because of what the people were—in bondage to a foreign power, and in need of repentance leading to remission of sins. This was all the Old Testament could offer, that is, for giveness. The law could bring only a legal conviction affecting what had been done; it never could bring an evangelical con viction leading to eternal life. Everlast ing life can be obtained only through the grace of God. To John there went out multitudes from Judea and from Jerusalem, and, confessing their sins, they were bap tized by him in Jordan. John’s testimony to the Servant was be fitting his position and his surroundings (vs. 7,8). “There cometh one,” he de clared, “mightier than 1.” In reverent ex pectation, John awaited and proclaimed the coming of the Lord. m . T he S urrender of the S ervant (9-13) “Jesus came from Nazareth to Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan” (v.9). In this act of the Lord Jesus Christ is seen His willing self-dedication to His serv ice. . It was done publicly, in formal proclamation of His acceptance of His BLACKBOARD LESSON
