needed to know that Jesus was God’s Son, His Son in a different way from that of every other person who should ever live on this earth. He couldn’t make them un derstand His message if they didn’t know that He was the Son of God. God had a way all planned, and Jesus, because He too is God and therefore knows all things, knew just what to do. As soon as He was grown up and ready to talk to the people, He went right away to find a man named John the Baptist. John was called the Baptist because he had gone about telling the people to re pent of their sins and be baptized. John' did this to prepare the people for the coming of the One who was greater than he, the One who had come to die that their sins might be forgiven. Jesus went to John and asked to be bap tized. Now Jesus didn’t need to be bap tized and have His sins forgiven, because He was God’s Son and never sinned. But He was Man, too, and He did what John was telling all men that it was necessary to do. And now was God’s time to tell that this was His Son. As the Lord Jesus was coming out of the water, a great and wonderful thing took place: “The heav ens opened, . . . And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Objects: Balances, a weight, some pic tures of people, currency, a small book, and a cross made of cardboard, covered with red cloth. (If a set of balances are not available, use a piece of stiff wire, or a light rod. Can lids may be fastened with strings to the ends of the rod. Children often are more interested in something improvised than in the real thing. The weight can be made by covering an ink Object Lesson W eighed and W anting Golden Text: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mk. 1:15). Outline and Exposition I. J esus and the P eople (14,15) J OHN, the forerunner of Jesus, had been imprisoned because of his fidelity to the truth. But when John’s voice was stilled, Jesus took up His ministry (v. 14) and began to preach what John had preached—with the difference that to John the kingdom was at hand in the Per son of Another, while to Jesus it was at hand in His own Person (v. 15). The call was for repentance and belief in the gospel. It was a universal call, although at this time it was given only to Israel. II. J esus and the D isciples (16-20) This passage is not an account of the conversion of these early disciples (cf. John 1:35-42). It tells, rather, of their call to service with the Servant (vs. 16,17). The salvation of these men (and of all men) did not depend upon their obedience

bottle with black paper. A sufficient amount of weights can be put behind the cross underneath the red cloth to equal the weight of the bottle.) Lesson: I shall put these people in this pair of balances and weigh them. The bal ances do not change very much. We have neglected to put in the weight marked “God’s Perfect Standard” on the opposite side. Now notice that the people are too light. Belshazzar thought he was all right until Daniel read the writing: “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting” (Dan. 5:27). When people do not know what God’s perfect standard re quires, they often are quite satisfied with themselves. Here is a book. Will it make the people equal to God’s perfect standard? No! King Solomon found that wisdom was not sufficient. I will put this money in the bal ances. Money will not satisfy the heart of man nor the requirements of God. Let us look at God’s way. We will hide these people behind Christ’s cross, to show that they have received the Lord Jesus as Saviour. Hidden in Christ, they now meet God’s perfect standard, for God said of Christ: “Thou art my beloved Son, in ’whom I am well pleased’’ (Mk. 1:11). See, the scales now balance. We should accept Christ as our Saviour, for that is the only way we can meet God’s standard for us. to the call to service; that call was issued because they already believed in Jesus. The true order is: salvation, and after that, service. The call to these early disci ples was extremely simple: “Come ye after me” (v. 17). But it held tremendous is sues. They were to be with Him, to learn of Him, to follow Him, and obey Him. The whole message was simple and plainly understood: “Come ye after me.” With the call came a promise: “I will make you to become fishers of men.” These men knew something of the patience, careful observation, and skill which were required BLACKBOARD LESSON •/ I6/38 "jcsus comE-stwinG.
