“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular” (v. 27). We can serve Him by attending the services of our church and prayerfully supporting its activities, insofar as they are Christ-honor- ing and designed according to the pattern of the Word. We are enjoined by the Lord to “consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsak ing the assembling of ourselves together” (Heb. 10:24, 25). May we be true serv ants “for Christ and the church” !

going. Every morning a man is at his business. Nothing keeps him from it but the grip of some disease which will not let him out of the house. He may feel inert, but he goes. He may have a headache, but off he starts; and when he is there, how interested he is—how absorbed, how de voted! That is store-going. Now notice the same man and his church-going. What a contrast 1 “I have a headache; I do not think I shall go to church,” or “It rains hard, and it is so cold,” or “I feel tired; I’ll stay at home and rest.” The first is business to which we must attend; we will lose our place or our money. The other is—well, what is it? Is it an important thing? Is it not God’s business? Is it not a very holy, a very solemn, a very urgent affair? Does not the welfare of the soul depend upon it? Can it be neglected with impunity?— S elected . Except upon the authority of the Word of God, one would hardly dare to say that such a highly exalted institution as the church needs any one of us frail human beings. [Cf. the “Meditation on the Les son” for January 23 for the Biblical de scription of the true church.] However, in the light of God’s revealed will, we see that He has planned to use us, and in His loving program of salvation, He does need us here upon this sinful earth where the church is the channel of witness at the present time. Under the striking figure of the human body, the inspired apostle describes the logical, orderly manner in which the Lord Jesus desires that His church should func tion. Paul tells us first how we become a part of this body, for he says, address ing believers: “In one Spirit were we all baptized into one body” (1 Cor. 12:12, R. V.). How, then, are we placed in rela tion to one another in this wonderful or ganism? In the human body, each mem ber has its own particular place of service, and it works there for a very specific purpose. Illness results when any one member does not function according to its appointed cycle of activity. This order is analagous to that of the Lord’s spiritual body, the church, for we read of it: “But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him” (1 Cor. 12:18). There is, then, no choice as to our station of service. He who made the body knows the proper place for each of its members. We read of the various duties to which Christ has assigned us in His body. “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers,” and so on (v. 28). After enu merating a number of official titles, our passage says that He has appointed some as “helps.” What an amazing expression! How important a function is that of a church “help” ? In the order of God, those who constantly and quietly help in the work of Christ in the church have re ceived a gift that is a rare bestowal of the Holy Spirit.
