A minister appealed to his church thus: “Many of you complain that all your time is occupied with business, and when the church makes a call for further service, you say you cannot undertake it.” At this point he paused, removed the glass from the carafe on the table, filled it with mar bles which he had brought, and then pro ceeded with his remarks. “You say that this glass is full, and it is full—and in the same way that your lives are full of business.” Then he lifted the carafe and slowly poured water into the tumbler. “You see,” he went on, “the glass was not full; and there is as much room for more work in the lives of most of you as there was vacant space in this tumbler.” —Sunday School Times. II. T he C hurch and the M ovies The reasons often given for staying away from church are rather ludicrous when applied to some other institution. For example, substitute “the movies” for “church.” 1. I know a man who has gone to the movies for years, and he is no better than I am. 2. There are as many good people out side of the movies as inside. 3. Too many hypocrites attend the mov ies. They don’t live up to the teachings, so I stay home. 4. I don’t like the people in charge of the movies. 5. I can get the same relaxation and in spiration that I get in the movies else where. 6. I don’t go to the movies because the directors never call on me. 7. I don’t go to the movies because when I went the last time not a soul spoke to me. 8. I don’t go to the movies because all they want is my money. 9. I don’t go to the movies because they play too much on my emotions. 10. I don’t go to the movies because the seats are too hard. —S elected III. U neven S train “In an ideal bridge the load is supposed to be evenly distributed over the entire structure,” said a recent writer. “For ex ample, when a train crosses the bridge, every important piece of metal bears its share of the strain. It was the failure to distribute the strain thus that accounted for a great bridge accident some months ago that resulted in the death of a large number of people.” Did you ever stop to think that the church is suffering from just such an un even strain? Too many parts shirk re sponsibility, laying it upon some one else already overburdened, usually the pastor. Twenty-five come to prayer meeting when there should be one hundred. They expect the minister to do all the personal work to win people to Christ, when they all ought to be personal workers. Neighbor, if the bridge in your section ever falls, don’t complain—if you have been a shirker. —G. B. F. H allock .

“How can I except some man should guide me”; said the AFRICAN to Phil ip. “How shall they hear without a preacher”; said Paul. Thousands of na tive AFRICANS are waiting to hear of Jesus. The S.A.G.M. is pioneering in uncovered territories, and through its band of faithful workers seeking to make Christ known. Information will be furnished on request. QUILTERS!
