According to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff's Office, inmate Joseph Campbell passed away due to COVID illness at Marshall Medical Center North on Friday, August 27, 2021. At the time of the press release on August 30, all individuals with COVID issues in the Marshall County jail have completed the quarantine time required by CDC guidelines. "We have not had any additional inmates test positive for COVID," stated Sheriff Phil Sims in the news release. However, the Sheriff did add that two other inmates are still hospitalized with COVID. One inmate remains in Marshall Medical North in ICU. He is not on a ventilator. Another inmate remains in Huntsville Hospital. He has shown improvement and is no longer on a ventilator. "These are unprecedented and challenging times we are living in," added Sims. We are following all CDC guidelines available to us to include issuing wearing mask, around the clock healthcare, monitoring inmates for symptoms, hand washing, hand sanitizer, social distancing the best we can, and taking temperatures." The Trail of Tears Commemorative Motorcycle Ride begins at the Alabama/Tennessee state line on U.S. Highway 72 in Bridgeport with riders departing at 8:00 a.m. CST on Saturday, Sept. 18. ARiver Walk Dedication Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18 at 10:00 a.m. to honor those who experienced the forced journey with the grand entry slated for 1:00 p.m. and bikes arriving around 2:30 p.m. The ride is held rain or shine. Guests are expected to follow current CDC guidelines, including, but not limited to, maintaining a social distance of at least six feet from people who are not from the same household, washing or sanitizing hands frequently and wearing a mask when physical distancing is not possible. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 called for the voluntary or forcible removal of all Indians from the eastern United States to the state of Oklahoma. In 1838, the U.S. government hired wagon master J.C.S. Hood to transport 1,070 Native Americans by foot and wagon from Ross's Landing in Chattanooga, Tennessee to what is now Waterloo, Alabama. Much of the journey followed what is now U.S. Highway 72. Many Native Americans died in Waterloo and others escaped into the hills and today, area residents can trace their Native American ancestry to those who fled. As many as 4,000 deaths occurred because of this forced removal of civilized Native Americans from their rightful homes. In recognition of this removal process, the first Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride was organized in 1994 with approximately 100 riders participating.

FYFFE UFO DAYS

Historic Cemetery The Willstown Mission Cemetery is located on the National Historic Trail of Tears route just a few blocks from the current high school in Fort Payne, Alabama. The cemetery is all that remains of what once was the site of a Mission/School for the Cherokee Indians. Historians have concluded that the site has approximately 50 graves. One of these is said to be that of one of the school's teachers, Rev. Ard Hoyt. This cemetery also includes the graves of eight other white settlers who were buried there between 1841-1898. The remaining unmarked graves are believed to be those of Cherokee Indians who died in Camp Fort Payne before departing on the Trail of Tears to the Indian Territory, which is now present day Oklahoma. Expansion to add 160 Jobs in "Rocket City" Alabama Governor Kay Ivey recently announced that defense contractor KBR plans to expand its operations in Huntsville with a new headquarters facility and more than 160 additional jobs in Alabama’s “Rocket City.” KBR has executed two leases with the real estate partners to occupy 90% of a 172,500-square-foot office building and roughly half of a 45,000-square-foot R&D facility at Redstone Gateway. KBR will consolidate its presence in Huntsville at two buildings being developed at Redstone Gateway by Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT) in partnership with Jim Wilson & Associates as part of a $65 million project. The growth plans will allow KBR to retain its workforce of over 1,100 people in the city. KBR delivers a range of high-end services and expertise in systems engineering, data analytics and mission operations around the globe. Its in-depth portfolio spans defense modernization; military, civil and commercial space; intelligence; cyber; advanced logistics; and base operations. "It's always great to see a company like KBR that has a major presence in Alabama decide to expand its operation in the state, especially when the jobs being added are highly technical and well paying," Governor Ivey said. "KBR is a world-class company, and I look forward to seeing it grow and thrive in Huntsville's dynamic economy." Houston-based KBR will provide engineering, scientific and technical services to the defense and aerospace industries at its new location just outside Redstone Arsenal, a sprawling government installation. “Recently named one of the ‘Best Places to Live in the U.S.,’ KBR is excited to enhance its presence in Huntsville, specifically at Redstone Gateway,” said Byron Bright, KBR Government Solutions president. “Whether we’re defending our nation or supporting the latest missions in space, we equip those on the frontline and those exploring a new frontier. As our capabilities in aerospace engineering, asset management and spaceflight operations continue to evolve and grow, maintaining offices in close proximity to both existing and future customers is the right thing to do.”

“With capabilities that truly span the globe and a culture of innovation and problem-solving, KBR stands out as one of the most impressive companies in its field,” said Greg Canfield, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. “These qualities mean KBR shares the same kind of DNA as Huntsville, and I can think of no more perfect place for the company to execute growth plans.” Huntsville officials welcomed KBR’s expansion plans. “We’re glad to see KBR expanding in Huntsville where the company's best and the brightest engineers and innovators contribute to aerospace and defense industries,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. The new KBR headquarters represents a positive development for Redstone Gateway, a 486-acre mixed use development that is home to leading defense, aerospace and research companies. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to support a world-class firm such as KBR at Redstone Gateway and are proud to develop their Huntsville home,” said COPT Huntsville Asset Manager James Lomax. “This decision reaffirms Redstone Gateway’s unrivaled combination of efficiency, convenience, walkable amenities, and access to important commands at Redstone Arsenal as Huntsville’s modern office park.” “This deal represents a consolidation and commitment for KBR in the Huntsville market that will allow KBR to take advantage of new workplace strategies and standards, maximize efficiency, while at the same time upgrade their facilities significantly for their workforce,” added Thomas Birnbach, president and vice chairman of real estate firm Cresa, which represented KBR.

Old Central School in DeKalb County A group of unidentified students (above) pose for a picture at the Old Central School in the early 1900's. The Old Central School was located near Rodentown in DeKalb County, Alabama. According to reports the school was started in the 1800's and by 1894 the building had two rooms, two teachers and over 100 students most of the time. The school eventually moved to Rodentown and in the mid 1920's it was called Central Institute. The school reportedly changed its name to the Rodentown School, which was in operation until the mid 1950's. At one point in time the school had as many as five teachers. CROSSVILLE DISCOUNT DRUGS

Gadsden State Releases Summer President's List Gallant : Everett Kelly Gaylesville: Sarah Landis Glencoe: Reed Holbrooks, Kevin Tullis

Gadsden State is hosting two vaccination clinics during September and is offering incentives to fully-vaccinated students and full-time employees. “With the number of COVID cases rising in our state, it is important that we do everything we can to encourage our students and employees to protect themselves and others by getting the COVID-19 vaccination,” said Dr. Kathy Murphy, president. “While it is not required of our students or employees, it is highly recommended.” Vaccination clinics will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 1 in the Beck Conference Center in Gadsden and on Sept. 8 in the Cain Learning Resource Center on the Ayers Campus in Anniston. Clinics are open to anyone ages 12 and up. A parent or legal guardian must sign a consent form for children that are 18 years old and under. No appointment is necessary. Pfizer and Moderna vaccinations are available while supplies last. Participants will receive directions on receiving their second vaccination at the clinics. Gadsden State is also sponsoring a Vaccination Incentive Program for students who provide proof of full vaccination. These students will be eligible for the Book Assistance Program during the spring semester, which will provide up to $500 in savings. Full-time employees receiving full vaccination will receive a $50 voucher to the Cafeteria or book store. Vaccination Clinics
