FYFFE UFO DAYS

Historic Cemetery The Willstown Mission Cemetery is located on the National Historic Trail of Tears route just a few blocks from the current high school in Fort Payne, Alabama. The cemetery is all that remains of what once was the site of a Mission/School for the Cherokee Indians. Historians have concluded that the site has approximately 50 graves. One of these is said to be that of one of the school's teachers, Rev. Ard Hoyt. This cemetery also includes the graves of eight other white settlers who were buried there between 1841-1898. The remaining unmarked graves are believed to be those of Cherokee Indians who died in Camp Fort Payne before departing on the Trail of Tears to the Indian Territory, which is now present day Oklahoma. An antique tractor show was one of the highlights of the 2021 UFO Days in Fyffe. The above picture is one of the many tractors at this year's event, which also included music, food, arts & crafts and more. Photos by Brandon K. Pierce | Alabama Ledger
