become the most powerful artistic inspiration of his career. Millar has referenced black and white photographs to compose this collection and instils into the canvas a distinctive flavour “with painting you can create stage lighting,” he explains, and his experience of working in what he refers to as ‘the very subtle light’ of the North and Scotland. The early morning dawn and winter sunsets offer a perfect foil in colour and tone to the dark, industrial content of the paintings, as if out of ugliness there is always some aesthetic of beauty and humanity to celebrate, most acutely observed in ‘The Power And The Glory,’ with the juxtaposition of a bleak metal bridge elevated to a place of beauty, bathed in the pink glow of a northern sunset. The Homecoming collection takes Millar right back to his roots, which has evoked an emotional response from both collectors and critics alike. “What is admirable about Alexander Millar’s paintings is that they are the product of reference and invention, as the best art should be, but they broadcast a real and touching sentiment.” says David Lee, editor of Jackdaw, the art magazine. “I
recognise immediately their intimate truths of a Britain materially poorer but spiritually prouder,” adds Lee. Millar says his work has ‘become as much of a ‘vacation’ as well as a vocation” for him and he has used the exhibition as a springboard for much of his educational work, encouraging local school children in Glasgow to engage and learn about art. “Every painting I do is almost reliving some fond memory frommy childhood. My paintings give myself and the viewer a moment to allow ourselves to be wrapped up in that warm blanket of love, reflection and nostalgia.” GALLERY Come and view the limited editions of Alexander Millar's Homecoming museum collection in galleries now. washingtongreen.co.uk
