Extending its services to the fibre optical industry, Optical Connections has inaugurated a series of webinars examining the vital and challenging issues facing the industry in this period of great change. Developed in conjunction with the Market Focus Committee the webinar program will continue into 2022. WEBINAR SERIES 2021 OPTICAL CONNECTIONS
MANAGING THE FIBRE NETWORK In the most recent webinar, Antonio Tartaglia, systems manager and photonics expert at Ericsson discussed one of the major issues facing the industry in the coming years of how photonics and 5G can be integrated and its implications for network management. Other presentations included Dr. Di Liang, distinguished technologist and research manager for Hewlett Packard Enterprise, who spoke about low-latency terabit DWDM silicon photonics for high- performance computing; Dr Junjie Li, chief expert, Optical Transport Networks at China Telecom gave an in-depth look at the operator’s all-optic network and Ed Ulrichs, director of Product Line Management in Intel’s silicon photonics group, spoke about silicon photonics in datacentre applications. As usual, the presentations were followed by questions from the audience and a panel discussion. CLOSE TO THE EDGE: FIBRE FOR ANY-HAUL IN 5G ACCESS NETWORKS. This webinar brought together key companies that are influencing the direction of the technology, products, and manufacturing. It reviewed what is hot and topical today but also looked forward to the next 5-10 years as enablers to maintain competitiveness in the segment. It included perspectives on standards/MSA as well as the market environment. Andrew Lord, senior manager of Optical Research at BT looked at how 5G will form the bedrock for exciting new applications and the potential impact of newly developed Hollow Core Fibre to ease latency requirements. Stéphane
at Orange Labs who reported on recent developments in the residential FTTH, Passive Optical LAN and mobile backhaul markets, in terms of copper replacement. Leesa Noujeim, signal integrity engineer at Google, gave a presentation on the feasibility of passive copper cables at 200Gbps/lane. Tracey Vanik, head of Photonic Market Research at EPIC- Assoc.com looked at several ways optical components and systems can reduce power consumption, improve throughput, and distribute accurate synchronization. Finally, Dr. Peng (Mike) Li, Intel Fellow and the technologist for high-speed I/O and interconnects at Intel, looked at the desirable modulation for 224G e-XSR, e-VSR and o-DR/FR, in the light of the current 112G PAM4 ecosystem. The final webinar for 2021 will be THE YEAR AHEAD , which will incorporate predictions from leading industry experts. Téral, chief analyst, LightCounting Market Research’s presentation looked at the implications of 5G on transport networks and particularly why fibre is becoming more important. David Binder, business development manager Data Networking, Yamaichi Electronics Deutschland explained how technical and geopolitical factors can influence hardware specs for pluggables. Stefan Dahlfort, product development leader at Ericsson, presented a co-authored paper focusing on the right optical solutions and the right time and cost for the evolving 5G radio access networks and accompanying transport systems.
