White City & Hammersmith Hospital Campus Where great ideas grow

Update Q1 2024

Welcome to this update Imperial’s White City and Hammersmith Campus is a world-class centre of innovation, discovery and connection – a place where great ideas grow. This integrated multi-disciplinary campus brings together scientific innovation, academic research, and local communities, to create impact at local, national and international scale. Our plans will grow our student base by over 5,000 and enable us to build impactful, and strategic collaborations with partners. We are uniting Hammersmith Hospital, the northern built -out area (I-HUB, Sir Michael Uren Hub, etc) and the southern development pipeline into a welcoming, cohesive, and collaborative environment. A healthy campus, where a diversity of people live, work and play throughout the day.

Vision, planning & design Principal Academic Building (Zone 3)

Imperial is developing a 400,000 sq ft GIA learning and research building as the academic anchor building to the campus – the ‘Principal Academic Building’ (PAB) – shown in dotted outline above.

It will be an inspiring and inclusive environment that encourages collaboration between academics, students, businesses, and public/third sector partners across multiple academic disciplines.

6

The building will enable academics and students to push traditional boundaries of research, innovation, education, pedagogy and student experience. This is a major increase and diversification of Imperial’s academic presence at White City & Hammersmith Hospital Campus. A design team has been appointed and we are targeting opening in the Academic Year 2028/29.

7

Active construction & design

‘Stay and engage’ under the Westway (Zone 1) Proposed: - Café/Pub - Art/Festivals - Student Union - Student services - Town Hall - Corporate reception - Celebrate Imperial’s research Opens c.2026. Connecting to surrounding neighbourhoods (Zone 9) 20m long east-west tunnel link to North Kensington. Tripartite agreement between Network Rail, Imperial and LB Hammersmith & Fulham. Planning submission as early as Q4 2025. Completion Q3 2026.

8

A new bridge for the campus

A new entrance to White City & Hammersmith Hospital Campus is being created via a new bridge spanning over the Central line. This will replace the existing Depot Road access. The installation has started! The new bridge is delivered in two tranches; a vehicular access opens in September 2024 and the remaining pedestrian access by Summer 2025.
