Alcohol involved in spring charges
Alcohol is responsible for one charge police filed for the first half of April and may also be the reason for another case. Liette Beauchesne, 57, ofThe Nationmunicipality is charged with impaired driving. She is schedule for first appearance in provincial court in L’Orignal later this month. An incident in Rockland on April 16 may also have involved alcohol. Police were conducting an R.I.D.E. checkpoint at the intersection of Laurier Street and Caron Street when a vehicle passed through the intersection and a man riding as a passenger started yelling and cursing at the officers. The man then got out of the vehicle and, according to the OPP incident brief, “appeared to want to confront the officers.” The man, his name not revealed, was arrested for breach of the peace and causing a disturbance. Stunt driver stopped Awoman had her licence suspended and her car impounded after a stunt driving incident in Rockland. The woman was clocked going at 146 kilometres an hour in a posted 90kph zone along County Road 17. She was charged under the Highway Act with stunt driving, including automatic suspension of her licence and confiscation of her car.
The least expensive drain system nee- ding maintenance is the Percy McAllister Municipal Drain at $218.78, which requires removal of a beaver dam. The most expen- sive is the Roger Clairoux Municipal Drain at $29,567.74. That involves removal of two unused culverts on land belonging to Ducks Unlimited, and also changes to the two culverts located upstream from the drain station along with a clean out of the ditch bottom.

School bus report For many students in rural school districts, going to school means riding the bus. Student Transporta- tion of Eastern Ontario (STEO) is a consortium of bus companies that provides transport services for the school districts in the region. The STEO’s latest annual report, covering the 2014-2015 term, noted that 18 per cent of buses operated through the consortium are doing double runs, and the average ride time for students on buses in Eastern Ontario is just under 25 minutes. STEO ride time statistics indicate that about two per cent of students may be on a school bus for more than 60 minutes each day, depending on a variety of factors for those individual students. The consortium has reduced the total amount of kilometres travelled for all of its buses from 122,488 kilometres in 2011-2012 to 111,588 in 2014-2015. STEO is working strate- gies to further reduce student travel time and also enhance student security during bus rides, including looking into the feasibility of installing GPS/video monitoring systems on all STEO buses. – Gregg Chamberlain
