New industrial centre project announced

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

Two agencies devoted to job development in the region are tag-teaming on a project to boost Hawkesbury’s industrial sector presence. The Hawkesbury Industrial Investment Association (HIIA) and the Centre de servic- es à l’emploi Prescott-Russell Employment Services Centre (CSEPR) will partner on a $3 million project, to build a 20,000-square-foot industrial centre building on Tessier Street. The projected cost is for the erection of the building shell. CSEPR representative Martin Normand and HIIA President Philippe Legault an- nounced the project April 14, at the CSEPR office in Hawkesbury. “There is a need for space suitable for industrial operations,” Legault said. “This is an excellent project for the re- gion,” added Normand. Construction is expected to begin in the fall and once completed the building shell will accommodate one to four businesses, depending on the number of tenant appli- cants. The building designwill featuremove- able walls, to accommodate the particular space needs of tenants. Learning program grows More students at Upper Canada district schools are doing part of their classwork studies in cyberspace as part of their regular career curriculum work. Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) trustee reviewed a progress report on the district’s eLearning program during their April 13 session. More than 900 UCDSB students are using eLearning in school compared to 289 when the program began during the 2008-2009 term. Program administrators are working on streamlining the UCDSB eLearning even, including providing professional development opportunities for teachers at UCDSB schools to help them keep up with changing information technology, so they are better able to assist their students. – Gregg Chamberlain “Thank you for what you are doing for our town,” said Hawkesbury Mayor Jeanne Charlebois. “It’s very much appreciated.” Potential tenants interested in reserving space in the new centre, once the building is complete, can contact the HIIA for details. see favour given to local contracting, for either building or supply services if possible. Baccalaureate program report The Upper Canada District School Board’s international baccalaureate program is proving very suc- cessful. District trustees received a highlights report on the program during their March 23 regular meeting. Superintendent of schools David Coombs explained that the program offered in the district, through Brockville Collegiate Institute, has international recognition for its emphasis on global issues and extra content beyond what is required for a high school diploma, under the Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma guidelines. Ontario school districts are allowed to offer the baccalaureate program as an enhanced option in addition to the required secondary school curriculum. – Gregg Chamberlain
