E

Before Reading Read the title together. Ask your child what might be unusual about a llama drinking lemonade. While Reading Invite your child to point to and say the name of each letter. Together, make the sound for that letter. Ask your child to name each animal. Point to the word for the animal and say it aloud. Ask your child to make the beginning sound for the animal name. Point to the object shown with each animal. Ask your child to name the object. Point to the word for the object. Together, say the word aloud. After Reading Revisit the book. On each page, try to think of another animal or object that starts with that letter. Literacy Tip Recognizing and naming letters and knowing their sounds are first steps on the road to reading. Extend these skills by playing “I Spy.” Identify an object, then say, “I spy something that starts with the letter .”

More Than Peach by Bellen Woodard

6-pack bundle 6 Books, 6 Think Sheets, Journal, Colored Pencils, Postcard

7PD818476

Before Reading Look at the front and back covers. Then read the text. Look at the illustrations. Who is Bellen Woodard? What problem did she want to solve? What do you think “Changing the world . . . one crayon at a time” means? While Reading As you read, pause and talk, think, or write about these questions: After page 15: In her letter on page 3, Bellen uses the word disincluded . How does Bellen feel disincluded at school? What does this mean? After page 25: How does Bellen get her friends to stop asking for “the skin-colored crayon”? What does her teacher think about this solution? How do you know? After page 35: How does Bellen get her message out to other schools and communities? Why is it important to her to do this? After Reading Bellen says that we shouldn’t ask kids what they want to be when they grow up. She says we should ask what they want to change. Why does she think the second question is better than the first one? Literacy Tip: The author, Bellen, shows readers that she’s a powerful leader. How? She writes scenes that show how she helps adults change their thinking, not just kids. For example, Bellen’s mother suggests something that doesn’t work for Bellen. Bellen uses the suggestion to come up with a new idea that she likes better. Bellen’s teacher starts using the language that Bellen came up with to get people to stop saying “skin-colored crayon.”

Family reading tips included!

The Littlest Yak by Lu Fraser

Before Reading Together, study the front cover. Share with each other anything you already know about yaks. (They are animals related to cows that live high up in the mountains in Asia.) While Reading After page 7, ask your child: What is Gertie great at? What does she wish she could change about herself? After page 12, ask your child to summarize Gertie’s growing-up plan. What kinds of things does she do so she can have “bigness” sooner? After page 23, invite your child to explain how Gertie helps the herd, and why her smallness is important. After Reading On page 8, Gertie’s mom says, “…BIGNESS can come in all sorts of disguises.” On page 27, she says, “…you’ve found you’ve got bigness inside, after all.” Discuss what Gertie’s

Gertie is GREAT at being the littlest yak, with the curliest, whirliest wool and the grippiest of hooves for clip-clopping up cliffs. Only, Gertie doesn’t want to be the littlest. She’s in a rush to grow up and be just like the big yaks. But what if there are some things that only a Gertie can do?

If you look closely at the titles written on the stack of books on page 12, you’ll notice that they are funny versions of fairy tale titles, with the word “yak” in them!

The Ocean Is Kind of a Big Deal by Nick Seluk Before Reading Look at the cover. What’s funny about the image? What are the sea creatures doing? How do their actions connect to the book’s title? While Reading As you read, pause and think or write about the questions below: • After the page with the dolphin saying “EEE EE EE EEE”: How much surface space do oceans take up on the planet? Which animals live in the sunlight zone of the ocean? • After the page with the giant squid: Why does the ocean get darker in the twilight zone? How do some animals create their own light? What is the bottom zone of the ocean? Why do the animals there move slowly? • After the page with the container ship: How does the ocean affect weather? Where does oxygen come from? What is the process by which oxygen is created? • After the “Ocean Facts” page: What big problem have humans created for oceans? Why is it a problem? What can we do about it? After Reading Why is the ocean a “big deal”? Why is it important that we treat it as a big deal? Literacy Tip This book is mostly nonfiction. It gives real information about oceans. But there is some fiction on each page too. For example, the relationship between Krill and Octopus is made up.
