The Tryout
by Christina Soontornvat
Before Reading Some people think of cheerleading as a beloved American tradition. Others think it is a serious sport. Still others think it’s an anti-female artifact from another time. What is your opinion about cheerleading? What does cheerleading mean or signify to you? While Reading As you read, take time to pause and think, talk, or write about these questions: After reading to page 50: What kind of racism and insensitive behavior does Christina deal with both in middle school and in her flashbacks to third grade? After reading to page 110: What does Tobin say to Christina that makes her so angry? How does her mother help her deal with it? How does Tobin’s racism lead to Christina trying out for cheerleading? What does she think being a cheerleader will do for her? What problem does she think it will solve? After reading to page 200: What is Christina worried will happen if Megan makes the squad and she doesn’t? How does her conversation with her friends in art class make her question her own motives for wanting to be a cheerleader? After reading to page 257: What is Christina’s topic at the Impromptu Speaking competition? Why is it a difficult one for her? How does she handle it? After Reading In the Author’s Note, how does Christina explain her complicated feelings about her hometown? What do you think it means to “belong” in America? Literacy Tip The first few pages of the book are a teaser , something that hooks your interest and pulls you in. In this case, the event in the teaser actually takes place toward the end of the story. After the teaser, the book goes back six months earlier, telling you, the reader, about events leading up to what happens in the teaser. This increases the dramatic tension for you because you have the event from the teaser in your head as you’re reading about what led up to it.
Before Reading Have you ever been in a cave? If yes, what was it like? If no, what do you imagine it might be like? Do caves scare you at all? Do you think they’re interesting? Exciting? While Reading • After reading the “Careful!” pages: What is a cave? What is speleology ? What are cave explorers called? How are caves formed? What is the difference between stalactites and stalagmites? • After reading to the “Cannonball!” pages: How was the Cueva de los Cristales discovered in Mexico? What is unique about it? What was discovered in the Rising Star cave system in South Africa? Why is this discovery important? What did the longest cave dive accomplish? • After reading to the “High five!” page: What mammal lives in Bracken Cave in Texas? How is this mammal misunderstood? What is important about Lascaux Cave in France? Why didn’t early cave painters sign their paintings? • After reading to the “Do you dare?” page: What are the Waitomo Caves in New Zealand famous for? What is unusual about lava tube caves? After Reading At the end of the book, the author says that caves all over the world are waiting for explorers like you. “Do you dare?” she asks. Do you? If you had the chance to safely explore a cave, would you go? Why or why not? to do—and not to do—because of their gender? How might these expectations Literacy Tip This book’s illustrations create a sense of wonder and mystery. How? Through the interplay —or interaction—between darkness and light, helping you feel what it’s like to be in a cave.

Before Reading Have you heard the expression “You have to work twice as hard to be just as good”? To whom do you feel like this expression applies, and why? While Reading As you read, take time to pause and think, talk, or write about these questions: After reading Chapters 1–3: What kinds of racial microaggressions—instances of subtle or unintentional discrimination—does Drew experience at school? After reading Chapters 4–6: How is the police officer unaware of—or unconcerned about—what Mr. Banks, Jordan, and Drew are feeling when he pulls them over? After reading Chapters 7–10: Why do Drew and Jordan make up names for each other? Why does Drew ghost Liam after visiting his house? After reading Chapters 11–13: What’s good about the S.O.C.K. group? What’s not so good about it? In what ways are Drew, Jordan, and Liam finally honest with each other in Chapter 12? What does this conversation lead to? After Reading Jordan draws a comic called “Look What I DREW! A comic about my friend.” Write a brief summary of the topics that Jordan covers in these comics about Drew (pages 42–43, 52–53, 204–205, and 222–223). What do they have in common? What do they add to the narrative of the book?
Before Reading Look at the cover and read the title. What do you think the title means? What can you predict about the book based on the cover? While Reading As you read, pause and write, talk, or think about the following questions: After reading Chapter 1: Look at Bell in the panels in which she appears on page 15. Her expression foreshadows —or gives hints about—how she’s going to treat Maddie. How would you describe her expression? What is she thinking? After reading Chapters 2 and 3: On page 35, Bell says, “If I let someone help, they could do it wrong.” What’s the problem with thinking this way? How do Bell and Maddie end up working together? How does it go? After reading Chapters 4 and 5: How does finding the injured cat change Noah’s—and Jimmy’s—life? Compare Noah and Jimmy in the panels on page 79 and the last panel on 102. After Reading Summarize Maddie and Boyd’s story. How do they meet? Why can’t Maddie keep Boyd? Where does she take Boyd, and how does that change her life? What happens at the adoption event? How does this affect Maddie? What happens that allows Maddie to stay in Boyd’s life? Literacy Tip: The creators of this book do something clever on pages 136–149. They use a comic format to tell you about people who make comics! Review those pages and imagine yourself doing each of those jobs. Is one of them your dream job?
Literacy Tip: In a graphic novel, illustrations contain details that help tell the story. For example, in the bottom panels on page 4, hearts appear on Jordan and Mr. Banks, signaling that they are sharing deep, private feelings about their dreams. On pages 95–96, as Drew is overwhelmed by feelings of isolation after meeting the Cardi de Academy students, he starts to vanish from the panels.

The Boy Who Met a Whale by Nizrana Farook
This Indian Kid by Eddie Chuculate
Before Reading Read the front and back covers. Where does this book take place? Who are the main characters? What event starts the book? While Reading As you read, pause and write or think about the following questions: • After Chapters 1–9: Who is the main character in the first chapter? Who is the main character in the second chapter? How do they connect? What does Zheng have that’s valuable? Where did he get it? What happened to Razi and Shifa’s father? Why does Razi feel guilty? Why does Razi change his mind about taking Zheng to the islet? • After Chapters 10–18: Why is Shifa suspicious of Zheng? What does she think Razi is doing that’s wrong? What does Razi realize about how he led Marco and Cook to Zheng? Who is Maalu, and why does Razi cry after being in the water with her? • After reading Chapters 19–27: Why does Shifa slap Zheng? How does this help him? How does Razi “forgive” the sea? How is the turtle connected to the treasure map? How does Maalu help Razi, Shifa, and Zheng? • After reading Chapters 28–36: Why is Zheng grateful to Razi? How does Razi plan to change? How do Razi, Shifa, and Zheng finally outsmart Marco and Cook? After Reading What is the Dagger of Serendib? Why is it important to Zheng, Razi, and Shifa to return it to its rightful owner, and who is its rightful owner?
Before Reading Based on what you know about the history of Native Americans in the United States, what challenges and experiences might you expect to read about in this memoir? While Reading As you read, pause and think or write about these questions: • After Chapters 1–10: When did Eddie start writing? What kind of “hustle” did he have going on in 4th grade? • Why did Eddie’s great-grandfather, Raymond, have a problem with stomp dancing? How did Eddie feel about Creek? How did Eddie feel about the bookmobile? • After Chapters 11–19: What was Homer’s impact on Eddie? • How is Eddie’s life affected by Momma’s relationship with Roman? Why is Eddie’s relationship with Lonnie important? What happens to Eddie and Lonnie at baseball tryouts? • After Chapters 20–28: In what way does coach Applegate humiliate Eddie, and why? Why are Eddie’s visits to Tulsa frustrating? How does he accidentally make communication with his father even more difficult? • Why does Eddie trash the band room? How does he feel about what he did? • After Chapters 29–Epilogue: How does making coach Branan’s team change Eddie’s life? • What makes writing at the Muskogee Daily Phoenix challenging? How does working there change the way Eddie sees himself? After Reading Revisit your answer to the “Before Reading” section. Were you right? What about the book surprised you? Literacy Tip Note that there are two instances of Native Americans used as brands or logos (the Big Chief writing tablet and the Indian brave school logo). The author doesn’t comment on these—he leaves it to the reader to notice and process on his or her own.
Literacy Tip The author uses the character of Maalu to help Razi forgive—and reconnect with—the ocean. Through his interaction with her, he rebuilds the trust he lost when his father died.

The Way to Rio Luna
by Zoraida Córdova
Before Reading Read the quote on the cover of the book. It says that the book is “a love letter to everyone who believes in magic.” What does that mean? How can a book be a love letter to a specific group of people? While Reading As you read, take time to pause and think, talk, or write about these questions: After reading Chapters 1–6: Magic is important to Danny. Explain why you think it is. How does magic cause trouble for him? How do his feelings shift as time goes on? What happens that restores his faith in magic? After reading Chapters 7–12: What does Glory tell Danny about enchanted books? What does he learn about The Way to Rio Luna ? How is this connected to finding Pili? What must he and Glory do? After reading Chapters 13–18: Why does Glory feel bad about the book and magic in general? What happened to Glory’s ability to see enchantment? How does Danny try to make her feel better? After reading Chapters 19–23: What does Danny learn from Ollie about Ella St. Clay and Leanna North? What does this lead him to figure out about Auntie North and the Shadow Queen? After Reading Even from the very beginning, starting with her first entrance on page 97, there are clues that something is not right with Auntie North. What are these clues? List three clues from different scenes in the book. Literacy Tip: At the end of the book, the author leaves several big plot points unresolved—such as what happens to the Shadow Queen and where Ella St. Clay is. Why might an author do this? It could be a signal that there may be more books in the series to come.
