Llamas with Lemonade: An Unusual Animal ABC Ariana Koultourides
Before Reading Read the title together. Ask your child what might be unusual about a llama drinking lemonade. While Reading Invite your child to point to and say the name of each letter. Together, make the sound for that letter. Ask your child to name each animal. Point to the word for the animal and say it aloud. Ask your child to make the beginning sound for the animal name. Point to the object shown with each animal. Ask your child to name the object. Point to the word for the object. Together, say the word aloud. After Reading Revisit the book. On each page, try to think of another animal or object that starts with that letter. Literacy Tip Recognizing and naming letters and knowing their sounds are first steps on the road to reading. Extend these skills by playing “I Spy.” Identify an object, then say, “I spy something that starts with the letter .”

Señorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer
Before Reading Look at the front and back covers together. Have your child tell you what animals they see. Note that mariposa is the Spanish word meaning “butterfly.” While Reading After the first few pages, ask your child to look at what the kids are doing and tell you what season it is. After the page that starts with “We will see you on your way,” have your child look at the tree and the ground—and what’s peeking over the fence!—and tell you what season it is now. After finishing the story, discuss what is fascinating about monarch butterflies. What makes them so interesting? Why does the author call them powerful? After Reading Read the author’s note to your child. Then ask: Where is the monarch’s summer home? Where is the monarch’s winter home? Literacy Tip Point out that the book starts with one butterfly, Señorita Mariposa. As the story goes on, more and more butterflies join her on the journey south.
