A NEW CHAPTER UNFOLDS
Celebrating Growth and Change in 2024
On Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, all eyes turn to Punxsutawney Phil. If he sees his shadow, tradition claims we’ll experience six more weeks of winter; if not, an early spring is predicted. This quirky weather prediction ritual in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, captivates many, offering a lighthearted twist on seasonal forecasts. Most of my life has been driven by a concept my father instilled in me early on about life and work. He asked me, “Have you had five years of experience, or have you had the same experience for five years?” The more I pondered this, the more I was inspired to seek new information and overcome challenges to help me evolve. I was determined to make my experience account for something.
In 2024, there are great things on the horizon, as reflected by the many changes you may notice. With our growth, we have had the resources to be able to pursue our mission of community education and we have many initiatives that I’m extremely ecstatic to share with you. First, we updated our logo and changed the name of this newsletter! “L.A.F.F.” is now known as “Your Financial Advocate.” I figured that after seven years, it’s time to change the theme and design — change is a good thing, and I welcome it.
“Your Financial Advocate” is the name I’ve used for my podcast, which has been in a pause of production for the past year as I’ve focused on my “March
As I look back over the past seven years of publishing this newsletter, I realize what a fun and successful journey it has been. I have been able to chronicle many of the changes that we have experienced as a team and that many of you have endured as our client family — thank you for making this possible.

Our last big initiative for 2024 is the launch of a new consumer seminar series that we are presenting called
“Your Wealth, Your Way,” which will focus on how to navigate this challenging economic environment to make sure that your money supports your life the way you wish to live it. Stay tuned for more information on how to attend! We are continuing to expand our online presence, and if you haven’t checked out our website recently, please be sure to check it out because we are continuing to fulfill our mission of providing you with the information you need to make good decisions about your family and your finances.

JENNIFER SHORT ESTATE PLANNING ATTORNEY STAFF SPOTLIGHT:
What do you do for the Law Offices of DuPont and Blumenstiel? I am an estate planning attorney here at the law firm. My typical work day consists of meeting with clients in person, via Zoom, or on the telephone, whichever the client prefers. Together, we decide which estate documents are needed for their individual situation. I strive to make the things people don’t like to think about — wills, trusts, and other end-of-life documents — simple and easy to understand. Describe your career path before you started working here. I started working here in the fall of 2021. Before that, I worked for a large national insurance company for 14 years. I handled litigation, coverage issues, and compliance. I received my Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore in 1998, and before that my Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Ohio State University. What motivates you to get up and go to work? There are a couple of different things that motivate me to get up and come to work. The main reason is the clients. I love to talk to them, hear their stories, figure out what they need, and make it happen. I’m also very inspired by volunteers — people who do what needs to be done for no particular gain. Volunteers are willing to take the time to help out a cause, their neighbor, or a loved one. That inspires me to do good work.
WE APPRECIATE YOU

Mitigating Risks in Your Investment Portfolio Diversification:
Diversification is a key strategy in investment management, offering a shield against market volatility and minimizing the potential risks associated with investing. Diversification spreads investments across various asset classes, industries, sectors, and geographic regions. This strategy aims to minimize the impact of any single investment’s poor performance on the overall portfolio. By not putting all your eggs in one basket, diversification attempts to balance risk and reward. The rationale behind diversification stems from the fact that different assets behave differently under various market conditions. For instance, stocks, bonds, real estate, and commodities don’t always move in tandem. When one asset category performs poorly, another might perform well, helping offset losses and potentially bolster overall returns. However, effective diversification requires more than merely owning multiple assets. It also entails considering the correlation between these assets. A well-diversified
risk tolerance, financial goals, and time horizon. A conservative investor might lean toward a larger proportion of bonds or cash equivalents, while an aggressive investor might favor a higher allocation of stocks or riskier assets. Additionally, diversification shouldn’t be limited to asset classes. Within each asset class, spreading investments across different industries, sectors, and regions can further enhance diversification. For example, a stock portfolio might include companies from various sectors like technology, health care, finance, and different geographic locations to reduce exposure to any single market or industry risk. While diversification doesn’t completely eliminate investment risks, it serves as a tool to manage and mitigate those risks and a cushion against unpredictable market movements and potential losses, ultimately contributing to a more balanced and resilient investment portfolio, ensuring a more stable path toward your financial goals.
portfolio includes assets that have a low correlation with each other, meaning their movements are relatively independent. Asset allocation, another crucial aspect, involves determining the ideal mix of assets in a portfolio based on an investor’s

Discovering Europe’s Overlooked Beauties
EUROPE’S MOST EXCLUSIVE ESCAPES
Europe, with its rich tapestry of cultures, history, and landscapes, offers many different experiences for travelers. From the cobblestone streets of quaint villages to the bustling avenues of cities, the continent beckons with a blend of the old and new. Places like London, Paris, and Berlin are all hugely popular, but these four hidden gems deserve recognition despite being often overshadowed by their more famous counterparts. GHENT, BELGIUM This medieval city is a treasure trove of history, with its well-preserved architecture and charming canals. The Gravensteen Castle, a stone sentinel standing since the Middle Ages, offers a glimpse into Ghent’s storied past. Art lovers can appreciate the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, an iconic piece of religious art housed in St. Bavo’s Cathedral.
PORTO, PORTUGAL Known for its port wine and stunning Douro River views, Porto captivates with its colorful buildings and intricate azulejos (ceramic tiles). The Livraria Lello bookstore, with its spiraling staircase and ornate woodwork, seems straight out of a fairy tale and is a must-visit for bibliophiles. LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA This small but vibrant city is a blend of Baroque and Art Nouveau styles with a touch of modernity. The Ljubljana Castle, perched on a hilltop, offers panoramic views of the city, and Tivoli Park is a green oasis perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. RHODES, GREECE One of the most southern islands of Greece, Rhodes is home to fascinating history and picturesque beaches. The Old Town is a one-of-a-kind blend of Hellenic Greece
and the knights and castles of the Middle Ages. To make sure you don’t miss any of the stunning beach views, you can hire a skipper from Mandraki Port to take you around the entire island. Europe’s lesser-known sites offer a unique blend of charm, history, and culture. Each place with its own distinct personality, tells a story that enriches the tapestry of European heritage. So, the next time you plan a European adventure, consider veering off the beaten path to explore one of these hidden wonders.

As government spending has climbed to an unprecedented level, the Internal Revenue Service is getting more aggressive than ever in its search for funds. Without proactive tax guidance, your income and savings are left vulnerable to Uncle Sam. Did you know … • The top 1% of all taxpayers (those that have Adjusted Gross Income over $540,000) pay 40.1% of all federal income taxes. • The top 5% of all taxpayers (those that have Adjusted Gross Income over $217,000) pay 60.3% of all federal income taxes. • The top 10% of all taxpayers (those that have Adjusted Gross Income over $151,935) pay 71.4% of all federal income taxes.
standard advice as “max out your 401(k)” and “contribute to an IRA”. We work with a carefully vetted team of tax professionals and CPAs from across the country to help proactively plan better tax outcomes for our clients. Through this effort, we can often lower future tax liabilities and, as a result, provide a more coordinated tax, estate

We believe these three goals must work in harmony to achieve the best results. Wouldn’t you agree? These services may benefit you regardless of whether you are a business owner, a W-2 employee, or a retiree. I have found that there are almost always tax planning opportunities for anyone who pays tax - don’t let the fact that you get a refund hide the amount of taxes you have paid. At this time of year, many people are considering whether they should do their taxes themselves or perhaps change their tax preparer. If you are contemplating such a change, we would like to make a special limited- time introductory offer. Our team will prepare your 2023 tax return for one-half the fee you paid a professional preparer to prepare your 2022 tax return. If you prepared your 2022 tax return yourself, we will prepare your 2023 federal, state, and local returns for $325. When that return is complete, we will also conduct a complimentary review to determine what, if any, changes could be made to reduce your future tax obligations. With a few exceptions, it’s too late to change your tax outcomes for this past year,
P.S. As with all the services that we provide at Advocate Wealth Solutions and DuPont and Blumenstiel, our offers to you extend to your family and close friends as a courtesy to you.
