MP Pierre Lemieux is in Rome this week as part of a federal delegation attending the elevation of Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins to a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. When he gets back, the MP will be busy preparing for his annual Spring Fling in Wendover, which features Justice Minister Rob Nicholson as the guest of honour. “I am honoured by the opportunity to attend this special event in Rome on behalf of Canadians,” stated Lemieux in a press release. “Archbishop Collins’ elevation to cardinal is a great honour for Canada, a tributetoourcountryintheeyesoftheHoly See." Archbishop Collins will be the 16 th car- dinal from Canada and his new position will make him the primary representative for the Catholic Church in Canada. He enters the College of Cardinals as Canada’s third active member, alongside Cardinal Marc Ouellette, the current president of the Congregation of Bishops in the Vatican, and Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, Archbishop of Montréal. The delegation will arrive in Rome on Feb.17,forthestartofcelebrationsmarking the rising of nominated bishops to their new ranks as cardinals, and return to Ca- nada after the closing ceremonial events on Feb. 21. After that the MP and his staff work on final arrangements for the Spring Fling March3attheLucienDelormeCommunity Centre in Wendover. Entertaining guests at the annual event will Bobby Lalonde, and Glengarry-Prescott-Russell’s renowned Arc-en-son violin group. “My Spring Gala will be a great evening,”Lemieuxstated.Ihopethatmany people will take advantage of this opportunity to meet the Honourable Rob Nicholson. Alfred-Plantagenet Township council approved an agreement with theMinistry of Community Safety and Correctional Services for an indemnity o the township for a three-year period should any local roads be used as a transport route for prisoners.
