The Performers

WARREN WOLF is a multi-instrumentalist. From the age of three, the Baltimore native was trained on the vibraphone, drums, and piano—under the guidance of his father Warren Wolf Sr. He at- tended Peabody Preparatory—studying classical music with Leo LePage. He studied with John Locke at Baltimore School for the Arts for high school. Warren also attended Berklee College of Music.

During his time at Berklee, Warren studied with Carib- bean jazz vibraphonist Dave Samuels. After graduating from Berklee in May of 2001, Warren became an active musi- cian in the Boston scene—also teaching at Berklee College of Music. Warren, who resides in Baltimore, is an International touring musician and music professor both at Peabody Con-

servatory in Baltimore and at San Francisco Conservatory. Warren has performed throughout the United States of America, South America, Canada, Italy, Spain, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Scotland, London, Greece, Singapore, Thailand, Jarkata, Bangkok, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow, and many other countries. Warren has made several recordings as a leader and as sideman for Mack Ave Records, Blue Note Records, and boutique Indepen- dent Jazz Record Labels. Musicians that Warren has performed or recorded with include SFJAZZ Collective, Christian McBride & Inside Straight, and Robert Glaspers.

The Warren Wolf & Helen Sung Duo

HELEN SUNG is a jazz pianist/composer and a Guggenheim Fellow. She diverged from her classical upbringing after encountering jazz during undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Helen became part of the inaugural class of the Theloni- ous Monk Institute (renamed the Herbie Hancock Institute in 2019) of Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory of

Music and won the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. In addition to her band and album projects, Helen has performed and toured with such luminaries as Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Wyn-

ton Marsalis. She is currently visiting faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and an Associate Professor at Columbia University, where she also was the inaugural jazz artist-in-resi- dence at its Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Insti- tute, which explores analogies between jazz and neuroscience. Other activities of note include her large ensemble project “Big, Band, & Beyond”; a digital streaming series “Re-Orientation: Asian American Artists Out Loud”; and partnering with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to present programs about the neuroscience behind making/hearing music to engage those liv- ing with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. “Sung plays with crisp swing and elegant invention, her rhythms drawing from the music’s deepest blues roots – and setting listeners’ heads bobbing – while she explores her own fresh ideas, often inspired from her classical training,” according to the New York Times .

Belize Friends School and Belize Friends Center

We thank Stony Run Friends (SRFM) for supporting our work in the South- side neighborhood of Belize City, the most impoverished urban community in Belize. Our children are faced with daily hunger, need safe places to stay, and need help negotiating streets where gangs struggle for control. The School and the Friends Center are safe havens, where children have support to enter high school and families can receive needed food and other support. Some of the programs and services that SRFM has supported include: • Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops • The Community Safety Project to end human trafficking, resist gang recruitment of teenage boys, and create awareness about mental health • Physical improvements to our building • Enabling food distribution among school families and others by a group of women in the Friends Center church

Your support for education has given vulnerable children scholarships, school supplies and uniforms so that they can stay in class, complete high school, and pursue new opportunities. And this leadership recycles! Our Board Clerk is a Belize Friends School graduate, and our Principal also grew up in Southside. Both are education professionals. Our continuing needs include: • Support for general operations. • Community safety project to create mental health awareness. • Scholarships (we expect to open a new fund for this next year) All contributions may be made online at

www.FUM.org or sent to: Friends United Meeting 101 Quaker Hill Drive Richmond, Indiana, 47374

On the memo line, checks should say “Belize Friends School and Center.”

About Quakers

The Religious Society of Friends, whose members are called Friends or Quakers, goes back to the 17 th Century. Today, there are approxi- mately 400,000 Quakers worldwide, living and worshipping in 87 countries. Quakers are all ages, educational backgrounds, races, sexual orientations, gender identities, and abilities. Everyone is welcome among Friends.

What do Quakers Believe? We practice a religion of experience; a contemporary, simple, and radical faith. Quakers observe no dogma, creed, or ritual. However, we are committed to certain beliefs and practices, includ- ing respect for one another and all

Quaker Testimonies Simplicity Peace Integrity Community Equality Stewardship of the Earth

peoples; hope that the search for truth will lead to right action; and trust in the divine element in each person to resist evil and to do good. We understand that one’s outward life needs to bear witness to truth discerned inwardly. We commit to live simply so that others can simply live. We believe the Inner Light is the manifestation of the Divine. The Inner Light is not one’s conscience but that which enlightens one’s conscience. We discern the Inner Light by silently and patiently waiting for the Divine to speak to us during what we call Meeting for Worship. Stony Run Friends Meeting belongs to a branch of Quakers that holds an unprogrammed Meeting for Worship, which means that we have no set prayers, sermons, altars, scripture readings, or hymns.

28

All who are present silently join in prayer and meditation and, if moved by the Divine Spirit, give expression to prayer or speak in the spirit of worship. It is through the weekly Meeting for Worship that we seek spiritual nourishment and inspiration to go back into, and provide service to, the broader society.

Commitment to Peace, Equality, and Social Justice

We believe that faith must be expressed through action and service to society – to serve society is to serve the Divine. Friends have engaged

in social action including the abolitionist movement, World War II relief work, refugee work, and the civil rights movement. We strive to achieve peace, racial equality, gender equality, prison reform, the abolition of capital punishment, and a living wage for all. We condemn war, but not a specific group of people, as we seek to establish a framework for reconciliation. We believe that those who are called enemies are, in fact, friends separated by misun- derstanding. The Religious Society of Friends historically belongs to a group of churches advocating for pacifism or nonresistance. Peace churches also include the Church of the Brethren, Mennonites, and the Amish. Join Us All are invited to join us for our Meeting for Worship, which is held twice on Sundays, at 9:30 and 11:00 AM.

The Intercultural Counseling Connection provides free, culturally responsive mental health services for asylum seekers, refugees, and other forced migrants in Maryland—survivors of torture and conflict-related violence, seeking safety here. Our skilled staff and compassionate volunteer counselors provide expert care that fosters hope and healing. Your contribution in any amount can help sustain our mission of providing pro bono, trauma-focused therapy for these new community members. To make a secure, tax-deductible online contribution, please visit www.interculturalcounseling.org and click "Donate Now" . Contributions by check can be made out to Uplift Alliance—our 501(c)(3) nonprofit fiscal sponsor—with ‘Connection donation' in the memo line, and mailed to: Intercultural Counseling Connection 4500 Frankford Avenue, Baltimore MD, 21206
