CELEBRATING A SEASON OF TRUE HOLIDAY SPIRIT Giving, Remembering, and Sharing Joy

With Thanksgiving behind us, holiday decorations are up, trees are sparkling with lights, and a warm cheer is in the air. The holidays are all about family, gift giving, and the joy of coming together. But Dec. 3 offers something even more meaningful — a chance to celebrate National Day of Giving. This day shifts the focus from personal gift giving (which is so much fun) to charitable giving and reminds us all of the importance of helping others during the holiday season. It’s easy to get swept up in holiday consumerism with so many enticing sales and promotions, each promising to bring joy to those we love. Deciding whom to buy for (and worrying whether we chose the right gifts) can be overwhelming! But the spirit of National Day of Giving is a refreshing reminder to step back and consider how we can make a broader impact this season and spread joy beyond our inner circles to those in need. With four kids, it’s easy to get wrapped up in making sure gifts feel “just right” and balanced, sometimes shifting my focus away from the true spirit of the holidays. That’s why I love the reminder that National Day of Giving brings. It’s a chance to step back and look around to see where our generosity can make a real difference — whether through supporting a local organization or helping those in need. We’re incredibly fortunate, and I know many could use a little “National Day of Giving reminds us that offering comfort and love is one of the most beautiful gifts we can give.”

extra kindness right now. For some, the holidays can be challenging, especially for those who’ve recently lost a loved one, are going through tough times, or are facing illness. It’s a time of year that can bring mixed emotions, and reaching out to lift others up is a beautiful way to honor the season. During the holiday season, especially around National Day of Giving, it’s a wonderful reminder to reach out to family members and anyone who may be spending this time alone. Loss can sometimes feel like a difficult topic to bring up, but we don’t need to tiptoe around it or act as though those precious lives didn’t touch ours. Talking openly about those we’ve lost can be healing. For some, there may be few people in their lives with whom they can share memories of loved ones, or they may simply feel unsure about how to start the conversation. By allowing space for these reflections, we can offer comfort and connection during a season that’s all about togetherness. I recently ran into a friend who had just lost her mom, and after we chatted for a bit, I found myself in that moment of wondering, “Should I say something about it?” I wanted her to know I was there for her, so I told her what a wonderful lady her mom was. Instantly, she lit up and started gushing — she clearly needed that chance to talk about her. It reminded me that sometimes, just opening the door for someone to share can be incredibly comforting. During the holidays, reaching out to those who may be struggling is especially meaningful. For those grieving a loss — especially if it’s an anniversary or their first year without a loved one — your support can make a real difference. They may appreciate the chance to talk about the person they miss, and simply asking

can be a heartfelt way to show you care. National Day of Giving reminds us that offering comfort and love is one of the most beautiful gifts we can give.

From my family to you and yours, Happy Holidays!

TRUCK DRIVER RECEIVED AN EMOTIONAL SECRET SANTA SURPRISE

When truck driver Carl opened his trailer door to a news crew in 2022, he did not appear to be in the mood for company. The 72-year-old East Idaho resident initially seemed standoffish and skeptical of the unexpected correspondent and his camera, asking several questions about why they were visiting him. But when reporter Nate Eaton handed Carl an early Christmas gift from “an anonymous person,” he warily relented and invited the crew inside. When he opened the gift box, Carl found a stack of gift cards inside. He appeared surprised and puzzled, so Eaton explained that four gift cards were worth $500 each for gas for his truck. Another $2,000 was included on four additional cards from a local supermarket so he could purchase groceries. Carl was in shock.

He began to tear up at the unexpected generosity and shook the reporter’s hand in gratitude when Eaton announced he had one more surprise left. He then handed Carl a cashier’s check worth $10,000 to spend however he wanted. “Thank you so much,” Carl replied emotionally before trailing off, “You don’t know …” It’s unclear how East Idaho News and their Secret Santa chose Carl as the subject of this generosity, but the selection was no accident. Carl had lost a leg above the knee 37 years prior but still worked four days a week at age 72, sometimes clocking 14-hour days.

he had three COVID-19 infections in less than three years. Despite worsening health and pain caused by his amputated lower leg, Carl continued to begin work at 2 a.m. while also making time to attend his grandchildren’s sports games.

Carl explained the gift meant he could finally retire.

He repeatedly requested the identity of his Secret Santa, but East Idaho News refused to say. So, Carl instead thanked his anonymous gift-giver through the camera. His hard exterior melted away, leaving only gratitude and awe behind. In his last words in the broadcast, Carl promised to “pay it forward” by finding a way to help someone else.

He’d also suffered more recent setbacks; his wife died from a brain aneurysm in 2010. Meanwhile,

Simple Estate Planning Tips for the Holidays The holidays are such a special time for family. As we gather to celebrate, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company, this is the perfect opportunity to talk about the things that matter most, including planning for the future. Estate planning might not seem like the most festive topic, but it’s an important one — and there are ways to approach it so it feels less like a chore and more like a gift of care for your loved ones. PREPARING FOR TOMORROW, TOGETHER

CHICKEN CAPRESE SALAD Inspired by EatingWell.com

• •

1/3 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp ground pepper

1. Whisk vinegar, olive oil, mustard, and pepper in a medium bowl. Transfer 6 tbsp of mixture to a smaller bowl and whisk in honey; set aside. 2. To mixture in the medium bowl, add 1/2 tsp salt, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Add chicken; toss to coat. Marinate for 30 minutes.

• • • • • • •

2 1/2 tsp honey

3/4 tsp salt, divided

1/2 tsp Italian seasoning 1/2 tsp garlic powder 2 (8-oz) boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced 8 cups coarsely chopped romaine lettuce 1 lb grape tomatoes, halved 1 (8-oz) container fresh mozzarella cheese balls, drained 1 cup fresh basil leaves

Starting these conversations can be as simple as mentioning it in the flow of a family discussion. For example, if someone shares a memory or talks about a family heirloom, you might say, “That reminds me — I’ve been thinking about how to pass down some of our treasures one day.” Or bring it up as part of a larger chat about being prepared, like, “I’ve been organizing some of my documents, and it made me realize how much easier it’ll be for all of us to have everything in place.”

mozzarella, and basil on a large platter; sprinkle with salt. Top with the sliced chicken and drizzle with the honey mixture.

Being honest is key. You can mention that while it’s not the easiest conversation, it’s about making sure

everyone’s wishes are clear and respected. Offer to start small — perhaps discuss updating a will or creating an advance health care directive. This can feel like less of a big step and gives everyone a chance to ease into the topic. Consider setting up a casual time to chat one-on-one with key family members, like right before a holiday dinner or during a quiet moment. Family members may be more comfortable sharing their thoughts in a relaxed setting without a large audience. Above all, try to keep things positive. Emphasize that these steps are about giving everyone peace of mind, knowing there’s a plan in place for the future. Planning can actually bring a sense of relief and unity. And remember, you don’t have to do it all at once! Estate planning is a journey that can start with one step and grow as needed. This holiday season, amidst the gatherings and traditions, a small conversation about future planning could bring a huge sense of relief and comfort to everyone! And once you’ve started the conversation, you’ll all have a head start for more planning down the line.

A PURR-FECT MATCH How a Kitten Helped Samson Unleash His Inner Pup

Golden retriever Samson takes his job as a medical service response dog very seriously, maybe even too seriously. For owner Lea Hendy, it became apparent quickly that the loveable giant didn’t know how to dog. On their days off at the dog park, Samson was the odd man out, sitting alone in the corner while the other pups played. It seemed like he couldn’t turn off work mode or form bonds with other dogs.

They gently placed the backpack with the little kitten inside in the middle of the room, and Samson immediately sprung into excited barks and tail wags. Lea said they were never expecting him to be so excited about his new friend, and the two have been inseparable since.

“It was so heartwarming to see him come out of his shell and immediately form a connection with Cleo,” Lea said.

Now, the pair spend every moment they can together, playing, napping, and enjoying each other’s company. Cleo has become an avid adventurer since the family started taking her on hikes. When the kitty tires out, she takes a ride on her older brother Samson, who looks so proud to be transporting his sister. Cleo, a tiny kitten with a big heart, allowed Samson, a workaholic looking for a friend, to break out of his shell and explore his world in ways his family never thought possible. Now, thousands of people worldwide watch their friendship and adventures on the animal-odd couple’s Instagram page @calvin.andco.

Samson joined Lea’s family to train as a service dog. When she noticed his seeming lack of social skills with other dogs, she was determined to find a way to bring him out of his shell. Little did she know that a chance encounter with a cat would change everything. While they were out traveling, Samson spotted a kitten in the window of a building and immediately wanted to play. It was an “aha!” moment that Samson could indeed make deep bonds; it just had to be with the right animal. A couple of months later, they brought home a tiny kitten named Cleo, and the instant friendship surprised everyone.

“It shows that friendship has no bounds,” Lea said. “Anyone can be friends.”
