Starting these conversations can be as simple as mentioning it in the flow of a family discussion. For example, if someone shares a memory or talks about a family heirloom, you might say, “That reminds me — I’ve been thinking about how to pass down some of our treasures one day.” Or bring it up as part of a larger chat about being prepared, like, “I’ve been organizing some of my documents, and it made me realize how much easier it’ll be for all of us to have everything in place.”

mozzarella, and basil on a large platter; sprinkle with salt. Top with the sliced chicken and drizzle with the honey mixture.

Being honest is key. You can mention that while it’s not the easiest conversation, it’s about making sure

everyone’s wishes are clear and respected. Offer to start small — perhaps discuss updating a will or creating an advance health care directive. This can feel like less of a big step and gives everyone a chance to ease into the topic. Consider setting up a casual time to chat one-on-one with key family members, like right before a holiday dinner or during a quiet moment. Family members may be more comfortable sharing their thoughts in a relaxed setting without a large audience. Above all, try to keep things positive. Emphasize that these steps are about giving everyone peace of mind, knowing there’s a plan in place for the future. Planning can actually bring a sense of relief and unity. And remember, you don’t have to do it all at once! Estate planning is a journey that can start with one step and grow as needed. This holiday season, amidst the gatherings and traditions, a small conversation about future planning could bring a huge sense of relief and comfort to everyone! And once you’ve started the conversation, you’ll all have a head start for more planning down the line.
