THE ALTER-G ANTI GRAVITY TREADMILL Article by: Vincenzo Adduci, DPT

The Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill is a treadmill that allows for body weight reduction training. The Alter-G can limit the weight bearing of the user to as low as 20% of their body weight. For example, if someone weighs 200 pounds and the machine is reduced to 20% the patient will feel as if only 40 pounds of force is being placed throughout their joints. This allows the Physical Therapist to reduce weight bearing and load on a patient’s spine, knees, hips and ankles to reduce pain. The uses for the alter-g include decreased weight bearing on a joint, less impact and compressive forces through the joint with dynamic activities. Additionally, it can be used when a patient has decreased weight bearing status following a fracture, surgical procedure or MD orders. The Alter-G is also very helpful for those who have had a neurological condition including a stroke, multiple sclerosis, Guillian-Barre syndrome, CVA, and other conditions which affect balance. The Alter-G has a support system which surrounds the patient to allow

for stabilization which will reduce any risk of falls. Many different exercises can be performed in the Alter-G including balance training such as single leg activities, sidestepping, forward and retro walking, and weight reduction jogging. The Physical Therapist will determine if you are a candidate for the Alter-G treadmill. They will then size the patient for the proper shorts that are provided to be placed into the machine. Upon proper placement into the machine the treadmill will calibrate based on the patient’s weight. Then a body weight percentage will be chosen by the PT for proper training. The Alter-G has many benefits including weight bearing, weight loss, cardiovascular training, balance training, and spinal stabilization. INSIDE: As we all age, our bodies experience a certain “wear and tear” on cartilage and joints. This can cause inflammation and pain, known as arthritis. According to the American Arthritis Foundation, Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, making itself apparent in people as they age. • 1/2 tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp cayenne pepper • 1 lb ground turkey

• 2 cans green chiles • 2 cans white beans • sour cream • shredded cheese (try sharp cheddar for an extra bite) • sliced radishes • fresh cilantro leaves

• 2 cup chicken broth • 1 can pumpkin purée • 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin • 3/4 tsp chili powder

STRAIGHT LEG RAISE

While on your back as shown below, keep your knee straight and lift your leg up while leaving the other foot flat on the surface with knee bent. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 20 times.

In a 5-to-6 quart slow cooker, whisk together chicken broth, pumpkin purée,groundcumin,chilipowder,cinnamon,andcayennepepper.Add ground turkey, separated, and mix to combine. Fold in the onion, garlic cloves,greenchiles,andwhitebeans,andcook,covered,until the turkey is cooked through, 4 to 5 hours on high or 6 to 7 hours on low. Serve with sour cream, shredded cheese, radishes, and cilantro, if desired.
