countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering . . .they saw his glory" (Luke 9:28, 29, 32). When Jesus took these three disciples up into that high mountain apart, He brought them into close communion with Himself. They saw no man save Jesus only; and it was good to be there. Heaven is not far from those who tarry on the mount with their Lord. The Master had times and places for quiet converse with His disciples, once on the peak of Hermon, but oftener on the sacred slopes of Olivet. Every Christian should have his Olivet. Most of us, es pecially in the cities and towns, live at high pressure. Amid all this maelstrom how little chance for quiet thought, for God’s Word, for prayer and heart fel lowship ! Daniel needed to have an Olivet in his chamber amid Babylon’s roar and idol atries. Peter found his on the housetop in Joppa; and Martin Luther found his in the “upper room” at Wittenberg, which is still held sacred. Dr. Joseph Parker once said: “If we do not get back to visions, peeps into heaven, consciousness of the higher glory and the larger life, we shall lose our re ligion ; our altar will become a bare stone, unblessed by visitant from heaven.” Here is the world’s need today—me» who have seen their Lord. — Sel. —o— June 22— “I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction’’ (Isa. 48:10). Does not ‘the Word come like a soft shower,-assuaging the fury of the flame? Yes, is it not an asbestos armor, against which the heat has no power? Let the affliction come—God has chosen me. Poverty, thou mayest stride in at my door; but God is in the house already, and He has chosen me. Sickness, thou mayest intrude; but I have a balsam ready— God has chosen me. Whatever befall me in this vale of tears, I know that He has chosen me. Fear not, Christian; Jesus is with thee. In all thy fiery trials, His pres ence is both thy comfort and safety. He will never leave one whom He has chosen for His own. “Fear not, for I am with thee,” is His sure word of promise to- His chosen ones in “the furnace of affliction.” — Spurgeon. June 23— “As soon as the soles o f the feet of the priests . . . shall rest in the waters . . . the waters . . . shall be cut off" (Josh. 3:13). The people were not to wait in their camps until the way was opened; they were to walk by faith. They were to break camp, pack up their goods, form in line to march, and move down to the very banks of the river before it would be opened. If they had come down to the edge of the river and then had stopped for the stream to divide before they stepped into it, they would have waited in vain. They must take one step into the water before the river would be cut off. We must learn to take God at His Word, and go straight on in duty, although we see no way in which we can go for ward. The reason we are so often balked by difficulties is that we expect to see them removed before we try to pass through them. If we would move straight

on in faith, the path would be opened for us. We stand still, waiting for the ob stacle to be removed, when we ought to go forward as if there were no obstacles. —Evening Thoughts. Then forward still, ’tis Jehovah’s will, Though the billows dash and spray. With a conqueror’s tread we will push ahead, He’ll roll the sea away. June 24— “A l l . thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad" (Psa. 45:8). When you are disappointed or vexed, or hedged in or thwarted; when you are seemingly abandoned, remember, son of God, heir of heaven, that you are being prepared for the higher life. You need courage, patience, perseverance; and it is in the hard places they are developed. You need faith, and you will never have it unless you are brought to circumstances in which you are compelled to act by the invisible rather than by the visible. You need those Christian graces of which the Bible speaks and of which the pulpit preaches; and practical life, with its va rious vicissitudes in God’s school in which you are to acquire these things. Do not be discouraged or cast down. When you are bestead, remember that God is dealing with you as a good school master. You will thank Him for His severity by and by. When God is dealing with you, do not accuse Him. Do not cry out, “Why hast thou forsaken me?" Bow yourself meekly to the chastisements of God, and study, not how you can get away from trouble, but how you can rise above trouble by being made better by it. — Beecher. June 25— “I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it" (Psa. 39:9). When the Almighty in a moment over turns our cherished schemes, by His grace may we be enabled to say: “O God! Here am I ; do to me as seemeth good to Thee. I wish not to evade any cross. The lot may be a bitter one cast into the lap, ‘but

The way this writer brings us into the heart of his subject matter is in itself an appeal; and when this con verted Jew brings us face to face with Jesus, our Passover, we are profoundly impressed.
