pain of His solitude! The thought of His loneliness is made more bitter to Him by contrast with the companionship which His faithful followers so easily secured. “Yé shall be scattered each one to his own.” They had all congenial surround ings and friends to return to; and, fleeing to that shelter, they leave Him solitary, like a traveler on the waste unsheltered heath, to meet the whole fury of the storm. “His own,” to whom He had come with hands outstretched craving a wel come, had turned from Him, and the iso lation aggravated even the solemn pains of His passion.— Alexander Maclaren. — 0— July 1— “Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful’’ (Psa. 101:6). Some of us may well examine ourselves as to whether we really are of much use to Christ in our daily life. We ought to be glorifying Him in our correspondence, our conversation, and even in our or dinary daily tasks in the home, or. office, or field, or workshop. As Dr. Babcock says, “Spirituality is Seeing God in com mon things, and showing God in common tasks.” There may be no glory in the task itself, but there is glory in doing it for Him. He who seeks to glorify Christ in his daily work will discharge his duties to the best of his ability, and will never attempt to shirk any part of his task, however in significant it may seem to be.— Canon F. J. Horsefield. My life is a brief, brief thing, I’m here for a little space, But while J stay, I’d like, if I may, To brighten and better the place. July 2— “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint’’ (Isa. 40:31). The eagle is the king of birds; it soars the highest into the heavens. Believers are to live a heavenly life, in the very pres ence and joy of God. They are to live where God lives; they need God’s strength to rise there. To them that wait on Him it shall be given. All He asks is that you should sink down in your weari ness and wait on Him; and allow Him in His Jehovah-strength to carry you as you ride upon the wings of His Omnipo tence. Dear child of God! I pray you, lift up your eyes and behold your God! Listen to Him who saith that He fainteth not, neither is weary, who promiseth that you too shall not faint o r be weary, who asketh nought but this one thing, that you should wait upon Him. With such a God, so mighty, so faithful, so tender, say thou to thy soul, “My soul, wait thou only up on God!’’—Andrew Murray. July 3— “0 thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors, and lay thy foundations with sapphires’’ (Isa. 54: 11 ). From His standpoint of vision on the hilltops of Glory, He sees the tossing of thy craft. Every billow, every lurch, every rebuff, is discerned and felt by Him.
He, too, has sailed through stormy seas, acquainted with grief. Not comforted by man, thou shalt be consoled by the divine Comforter. When the man born blind was cast out of the synagogue, Jesus found him ; and He wjll find thee. Deep down in the tossing waves,' He will lay thy foundations in fair colors, and will spare no stones, however precious, in the elab oration of thy character. Sapphires, ru bies, and carbuncles are very resplendent and beautiful; but they are all the chib dren of fire. These jewels are produced of very ordinary ingredients, which have been subjected to tremendous pressure and terrific heat._ When next your heart misgives you amid fiery trials, remember that God is at work making the rubies and carbuncles of your eternal array. You will be well compensated.— Daily Devo tional Commentary. The road of life is rough But then, there is the glory of the sky. —o—; July 4— “A s I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, . . . the heavens were opened, and I saw visions o f God ■. . and the hand of the Lord was there upon him (me)” (Ezek. 1:1, 3). There is no commentator of the Scrip tures half as valuable as a captivity. It unfolds new beauties where all had ap peared to be beautiful before: and where formerly there was what we thought a wilderness, it has revealed to us a fruitful field. The old Psalms have quavered for us with a new pathos as we sat by our “Babel’s stream,” and have sounded for us with new joy as we found our cap tivity turned as the streams in the south. If we are to receive benefit from our cap tivity we must accept the situation and turn it to the best possible account. Fret ting over that from which we have been removed or which has been taken away from us, will not make things better, but it will prevent us from improving those which remain. No calamity can be to us an unmixed evil if we carry it in direct and fervent prayer to God, for even as one is taking shelter from the rain be neath a tree may find on its branches fruit which he looked not for, so we, in fleeing for refuge beneath the shadow of God’s wing, will always find more in God than we had seen or known before. It is thus through our trials and afflictions that God gives us fresh revelations of
