In this powerful and eye-opening new edition of Progressives, Leftists, and Black America, author Brian Oglesby returns with an expanded and updated analysis of the real-world impact progressive policies have had on Black communities in the United States. With added chapters, refined arguments, and timely reflections on recent political and cultural shifts, this edition takes the conversation deeper than ever before. Oglesby unapologetically confronts the widely accepted belief that progressive and leftist ideologies have been beneficial to Black Americans. Instead, he offers a well-reasoned critique, exposing how decades of liberal policy-making have eroded family structures, weakened educational systems, and fostered generational dependence on government programs. From the breakdown of the nuclear family to the rise of identity politics, this book challenges readers to examine the unintended consequences of political loyalty and ideological conformity. This edition includes new material analyzing recent national events, shifts in party platforms, and the cultural narrative surrounding race, equity, and justice. Oglesby also addresses how faith, entrepreneurship, and personal responsibility can serve as pathways toward lasting empowerment and liberation. Passionate, data-driven, and deeply personal, Progressives, Leftists, and Black America is more than a political critique-it's a rallying cry for intellectual independence, cultural restoration, and a renewed vision for the future of Black America.
Whether you're a policymaker, educator, activist, or everyday citizen, this book will challenge your assumptions and expand your perspective.

The Queen’s style throughout her decades-long reign was nothing short of powerful—transcending glamour and style by communicating influence through her clothes. The Queen’s Decades of Style
What dressing up meant to Queen Elizabeth II was a card not quite seen by most as an essential part of her rule, which, on the contrary, was a culmination of her keen attention to detail and eye for elaborate curation. A marriage of class and quirk, here is a timeline of the queen’s impeccable fashion moments since the start of her reign.

The last 20 years of Her Majesty’s reign was a bonding of all her iconic styling for decades from bold colours, great hats, pearls, brooches, skirts, and black handbags. The Queen maintained clear composure in her looks in a way to show her dedication to public service amid global and personal turmoil. She lost her mother, sister, and her husband in this period. APAN, ISLAND COUNTRY LYING OFF THE EAST coast of Asia. It consists of a great string of islands in a northeast-southwest arc that stretches for approximately 1,500 miles (2,400 km) through the western North Pacific Ocean. Nearly the entire land area is taken up by the country’s four main islands; from north to south these are Hokkaido (Hokkaidō), Honshu (Honshū), Shikoku, and Kyushu (Kyūshū). Honshu is the largest of the four, followed in size by Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. In addition, there are numerous smaller islands, the major groups of which are the Ryukyu (Nansei) Islands (including the island of Okinawa) to the south and west of Kyushu and the Izu, Bonin (Ogasawara), and Volcano (Kazan) islands to the south and east of central Honshu. Fuji (Fuji-san), which, at an elevation of 12,388 feet (3,776 metres), is Japan’s highest mountain. Abundant precipitation and the generally mild temperatures throughout most of the country have produced a lush vegetation cover and, despite the mountainous terrain and generally poor soils, have made it possible to raise a variety of crops. Japan has a large and, to a great extent, ethnically homogeneous population, which is heavily concentrated in the low-lying areas along the Pacific coast of Honshu. Complexity and contrast are the keynotes of life in Japan—a country possessing an intricate and ancient cultural tradition yet one that, since 1950, has emerged as one of the world’s most economically and technologically advanced societies. Heavy emphasis is placed on education, and Japan is one of the world’s most literate countries. Tension between old and new is apparent in all phases of Japanese life. A characteristic sensitivity to natural beauty and a concern with form and balance are evident in such cities as Kyōto and Nara, as well as in Japan’s ubiquitous gardens. Even in the countryside, however, the impact of rapid Westernization is evident in many aspects of Japanese life. The agricultural regions are characterized by low population densities and well- ordered rice fields and fruit orchards, whereas the industrial and urbanized belt along the Pacific coast of Honshu is noted for its highly concentrated population, heavy industrialization, and environmental pollution. Humans have occupied Japan for tens of thousands of years, but Japan’s recorded history begins only in the 1st century BCE, with mention in Chinese sources. Contact with China and Korea in the early centuries CE brought profound changes to Japan, including the Chinese writing system, Buddhism, and many artistic forms from the continent. The first steps at political unification of the country occurred in the late 4th and early 5th centuries CE under the Yamato court. A great civilization
then developed first at Nara in the 8th century and then at Heian-kyō (now Kyōto) from the late 8th to the late 12th century. The seven centuries thereafter were a period of domination by military rulers culminating in near isolation from the outside world from the early 17th to the mid-19th century. Japan is bounded to the west by the Sea of Japan (East Sea), which separates it from the eastern shores of South and North Korea and southeastern Siberia (Russia); to the north by La Perouse (Sōya) Strait, separating it from Russian-held Sakhalin Island, and by the Sea of Okhotsk; to the northeast by the southern Kuril Islands (since World War II under Soviet and then Russian administration); to the east and south by the Pacific; and to the southwest by the East China Sea, which separates it from China. The island of Tsushima lies between northwestern Kyushu and
southeastern South Korea and defines the Korea Strait on the Korean side and the Tsushima Strait on the Japanese side. Japanese is the national language, and Ainu is almost extinct. The Japanese language is generally included in the Altaic linguistic group and is especially akin to Korean, although the vocabularies differ. Some linguists also contend that Japanese contains elements of Southeast Asian languages. The introduction of the Chinese writing system and of Chinese literature about the 4th century CE enriched the Japanese vocabulary. Until that time Japanese had no written form, and at first Chinese characters (called kanji in Japanese) were used to write Japanese; by the 9th century two syllabaries, known collectively as kana (katakana and hiragana), were developed from them. Since then, a combination of kanji and kana has been used for written Japanese. Although

some 3,000 to 5,000 kanji are in general use, after World War II the number of characters necessary for a basic vocabulary was reduced to about 2,000, and the writing of these characters was simplified. Tens of thousands of Western loanwords, principally from English, also have been adopted. It is common for Western observers of contemporary Japan to emphasize its great economic achievement without equal regard to cultural attributes. Yet Japanese cultural distinctiveness and the manner in which it developed are instructive in understanding how it is that Japan came to be the first non-Western country to attain great-power status. The Japanese long have been intensely aware of and have responded with great curiosity to powerful outside influences, first from the Asian mainland (notably China) and more

This aesthetic is best captured in the Japanese concept of shibui (literally, “astringent”), or refined understatement in all manner of artistic representation. Closely related are the twin ideals of cultivated simplicity and poverty (wabi) and of the celebration of that which is old and faded (sabi). Underlying all three is the notion of life’s transitory and evanescent nature, which is linked to Buddhist thought (particularly Zen) but can be traced to the earliest examples of Japanese literature. Thus, outside influences were assimilated, but the basic sense of Japaneseness was unaffected; for example, Buddhist deities were adopted into the Shintō pantheon. Japan’s effort to modernize quickly in the late 19th and 20th centuries—albeit undertaken at great national and personal sacrifice—was really an extension of the same processes at work in the country for centuries. Prehistoric Japanese culture was exposed to ancient Chinese cultural
influences beginning some two millennia ago. One consequence of these influences was the imposition of the gridiron system of land division, which long endured; it is still possible to trace the ancient place- names and field division lines of this system. Chinese writing and many other Chinese developments were introduced in the early centuries CE; the writing system underwent many modifications over the centuries, since it did not fit the Japanese language. Buddhism— which originated in India and underwent modification in Central Asia, China, and Korea before reaching Japan about the 6th century—also exerted a profound influence on Japanese cultural life, although over the course

THE FOOD Whether visitors are staying in the Land of Smiles for one day or one month, Thai food is so delicious and diverse that visitors should never have to eat the same dish twice. Visitors will even find that the cuisine changes as their location does, keeping their food options interesting as they venture from one city to the next. THE PEOPLE Though all of the countries people visit are going to have their fair share of friendly locals, there is something about Thai people that makes venturing to this particular country less intimidating. Thai people are traditionally friendly, or at least perceived to be so. Maybe it is their traditional Thai greeting, the Wai, which is when someone slightly bows with their hands together almost as if they are in prayer. Maybe it is the way many Thais eat family-style, with some visitors lucky enough to be invited to join in on a delicious meal. With a national motto like mai pen rai, meaning don’t worry or it’s okay, the nation certainly seems to have an overall friendly and chilled vibe to it. THE CHEAP COST OF TRAVEL Travelers on a budget are constantly and regretfully having to slash cities from their itineraries due to a sheer lack of funds. This is not the case in Thailand, however, where travel is cheap and different modes of transportation are readily available. Budget-friendly airlines, like Nok Air and AirAsia, always seem to be running some type of sale on flights, with direct flights available to international and domestic airports in cities across the country. Buses and trains around the country are incredibly affordable as well, with stations in both rural cities and some of the biggest tourist destinations in Thailand.

THE WEATHER Thailand has three major seasons, all of which are suitable for vacationers to travel during and enjoy. The country is busiest during the dry season, when temperatures do not normally reach over 32C (90F). During the hot season, tourists flock to the many dreamy beaches found along Thailand’s immense coast. Bangkok and northern Thailand are popular destinations during the monsoon season, as the islands are prone to flooding during this time. Though there are pros and cons to each season, visitors are never likely to get cold and can usually enjoy plenty of the country’s sunshine during their visit. THE NIGHTLIFE Thailand is eager to please those visitors who thrive after dark. Get ready night owls, as the country is equipped with every type of nightlife tourists could possibly imagine. Backpackers head to Khao San Road to connect with like-minded travelers and buckets upon buckets of booze. Those with seedier intentions beeline for one of the many red light districts found in cities across the country, including Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, and more. Though these are some of the main draws that entice those looking for a good night out, the country is also renowned for its reggae and jazz bars in addition to having some of the best LGBTQ-friendly nightlife in the world, especially in Bangkok. THE DIVING Thailand has over 1,500 miles of coastline, and some of the best dive sites in the world. Regardless of when travelers visit, there should be at least a handful of prime spots to explore under the sea, as the monsoon season rarely affects areas like Pattaya, known for the many sea turtles that divers are almost guaranteed to spot here. Some of the

best places to dive in Thailand include Koh Tao, the Surin Islands, Koh Chang and Chumphon. THE TEMPLES With over 40,000 Buddhist temples found across the Land of Smiles, visitors are bound to find at least one that catches their eye. These structures date back to all of the different dynasties, each one reflecting that era’s architectural and construction style. Each province is bound to have at least one of these majestic wonders, though the most unique and abundant are found in the capital. THE ADVENTURE ASPECT Because the country’s terrain is so unique, visitors to the Kingdom are able to go on a number of different adventurous excursions during their stay. Elephant sanctuaries are great for tourists who are animal lovers, while
those looking for something a bit more adventurous may instead opt for a day on one of the country’s many rivers and go white water rafting. There are also trails to be trekked, waves to be surfed, jungles to be ziplined through, and more in Thailand. The markets in Thailand are like no others in the world. Each one has its own distinct character, from the crowds they attract to the items which are for sale. Some markets are dedicated to street eats while others are chock full of antiques and secondhand items. Visitors never know what they are going to find at these unique attractions. THE FESTIVALS It seems as though Thais cannot go too long before having to escape from their 9-5 job in order to celebrate one festival or another. Many of these festivals are derived from things like religion or the
lunar calendar, but one aspect remains constant: they are incredibly interesting to experience. Many travelers go as far as to plan entire holidays around these festivals in order to attend and see what all of the fuss is about. A great example of this would be Songkran, a festival in which a nationwide water fight takes place. THE RICH HISTORY AND CULTURE Though many cities in Thailand continue to be modernized with things like urban decor, everywhere visitors look will have bits and pieces of Thailand’s interesting and ancient culture somehow intertwined. Cities like Sukhothai hold their ground in terms of modernization, as they are still home to many ancient ruins dating back to the Siamese Kingdom in 1238. Its history is also found in Thailand’s many art forms, like traditional Thai dancing or Thai puppetry performances.

THE CAPITAL Bangkok gets a section all its own, as the capital is hands down one of the main reasons to visit the country. Over eight million people reside in the city, many of whom are foreigners who have made Bangkok home. It seems as though once someone visits the capital long enough, they never want to leave. Bangkok is often the first stop on traveler’s itineraries before heading around Southeast Asia, and it’s usually not their favorite city. The capital is crowded and can be overwhelming, leaving many travelers less than impressed. Those who get off the beaten path, however, will find Bangkok is a city full of surprises, with seemingly every top thing to see and do available. Temples, red light districts, sky bars, museums, art galleries, parks: you name it, the city is sure to have it. THE WILDLIFE Thailand is home to an abundance of
wildlife in its many national parks, beaches and mountainous terrain. Khao Yai National Park in central Thailand is home to tigers, wild boars, and if visitors are truly lucky they may even see an elephant or two. In the south, there are entire beaches filled with monkeys, with tourists flocking to places like Monkey Beach on Koh Phi Phi to see what the hype is all about. Remember to be a responsible tourist and not feed the wildlife, as well as steering clear of those tourist attractions which abuse animals for profit. THE BEACHES Thailand’s geography is certainly impressive, with every province across the country having some unique geographical feature worth exploring. However, the country’s most impressive natural feature is surely its beaches, with over 1,500 miles of coastline to choose from. Though there are a fair share of beaches that have been
overrun with sun soaking tourists, there are many incredible stretches of sand that remain quiet, secluded and stunning. Some of these beaches include Freedom Beach in Phuket and Sunset Beach on the island of Koh Kradan. THE EPIC BACKPACKING SCENE Recent years have proved to be busy ones for backpackers, as the number of travelers to Southeast Asian countries has grown exponentially. Between 2010 and 2015, Thailand saw an 87 percent increase in international arrivals alone, many of whom are backpackers. These budget-friendly travelers tend to travel in groups they meet along the way, which makes Thailand such an opportune destination for them because there are so many. Affordable hostels can be found in almost all of the major cities – and some quieter ones, too – making it easy to meet fellow backpackers and explore Thailand together. EC

BUT FIRST, COFFEE The research found that those who drank moderate amounts of coffee, even with a little sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee. by Dani Blum
HAT MORNING CUP OF coffee may be linked to a lower risk of dying, researchers from a study published Monday in The Annals of Internal Medicine concluded. Those who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day, even with a teaspoon of sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee. Those who drank unsweetened coffee were 16 to 21 percent less likely to die during the study period, with those drinking T
about three cups per day having the lowest risk of death when compared with noncoffee drinkers. Researchers analyzed coffee consumption data collected from the U.K. Biobank, a large medical database with health information from people across Britain. They analyzed demographic, lifestyle and dietary information collected from more than 170,000 people between the ages of 37 and 73 over a median follow-up period of seven years. The mortality risk
remained lower for people who drank both decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee. The data was inconclusive for those who drank coffee with artificial sweeteners. “It’s huge. There are very few things that reduce your mortality by 30 percent,” said Dr. Christina Wee, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a deputy editor of the scientific journal where the study was published. Dr. Wee edited the study and published a corresponding editorial in the same journal.

There are, however, major caveats to interpreting this research, she added. This is an observational study, which means the data cannot conclusively prove that coffee itself lowers the risk of dying; there may be other lifestyle factors contributing to that lower mortality risk among people who drink coffee, like a healthy diet or a consistent exercise routine. The average amount of added sugar per cup of sweetened coffee in the study was a little more than a teaspoon — far less than what is typically added
to many sugary drinks at coffee chains across the country. A tall Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks, for instance, contains 25 grams of sugar, about five times as much sugar as a sweetened cup of coffee from the study. “All bets are off when it comes to matching this with a latte, a Frappuccino, the super mocha whipped whatever,” said Dr. Eric Goldberg, a clinical associate professor of medicine at the N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine. These beverages tend to be high in calories and fat, he said,
potentially negating or at least blunting any benefit from the coffee itself. This new study is the latest in a robust line of research showing coffee’s potential health advantages, he said. Previous research has linked coffee consumption with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, liver and prostate cancers and other health issues. Scientists don’t know exactly what makes coffee so beneficial, Dr. Goldberg said, but the answer may lie in its antioxidant properties, which can prevent or delay cell damage. Coffee beans contain high amounts of antioxidants, said Beth Czerwony, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition in Ohio, which can help break down free radicals that cause damage to cells. Over time, a buildup of free radicals can increase inflammation in the body, which can cause plaque formation related to heart disease, she said, so dietitians recommend consuming foods and beverages that are rich in antioxidants. There’s also the possibility that coffee drinkers tend to make healthier choices in general. They might opt for a cold brew or a cup of drip coffee instead of a less healthy source of caffeine, like an energy drink or soda, Dr. Goldberg added. “If you’re pounding Mountain Dew or Coca-Cola or Red Bull or all these other drinks, they have tons more sugar, all the artificial stuff — versus coffee, which is a generally unprocessed food.” Despite the encouraging evidence about coffee, there isn’t enough data to suggest that people who don’t currently drink coffee should add a stop to Starbucks during their morning routines, Dr. Wee said. And even avid coffee drinkers shouldn’t use the study to justify endless cups of java. The study showed that the benefits of coffee tapered off for people who drank more than 4.5 cups of coffee each day. Past studies have shown that consuming “extreme amounts” — over seven cups per day — can take a toll, she said. “Moderation is good,” Dr. Goldberg said. “But too much of a good thing isn’t necessarily more of a good thing.”
