Momentum Builds to Amplify IPR

a hole in the IPR budget of just over $300,000 for the 2025–26 fiscal year and each year following, IPR is thriving and finding new ways both to connect with listeners and to help listeners connect with their community, their world, and their shared humanity. This was the vision of our founder, Joe Maddy, for a public radio station at Interlochen—a vision that your support continually realizes and renews. Thank you! “I want listeners to make connections to our world through the lens of classical music so that we can better understand ourselves. Intermezzo is about sparking curiosity. It’s a daily invitation to think about music and life in new ways, all while listening to something beautiful.” — Christy L’Esperance, Classical IPR host For all curious classical music fans, Intermezzo offers new ways to think about the music they love and to discover new composers, works, and recordings. For young listeners, the show is an invitation to explore a genre that may be unfamiliar—and to hear voices like their own reflected in the world of classical music, playing with big ideas that are relatable and accessible to them. Listeners can enjoy the show at 7:30 a.m. each weekday or via podcast delivery. Daily trivia questions and riddles challenge listeners to test their knowledge; online bonuses like YouTube videos and full music recordings dive deeper into subjects discussed on-air.

As Interlochen nears its centennial and Interlochen Public Radio marks 62 years on the air, we are committed to our initiative to Amplify IPR, to bolster programming capacity and expand listenership in northern Michigan and beyond. Through donor support, Amplify IPR continues to gain momentum. Despite the rescission of funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which creates

attention on their radios and digital devices with a lively mix of music, conversation, insight, and humor, with a new host and a rotating cast of young co-hosts to lead the way.

Since April 2025, Intermezzo has offered listeners a fun, bite-sized exploration of creative themes—on weekly topics ranging from the science of sound to musical humor—that are spread over five weekday morning episodes, via music and conversation between Classical IPR host Christy L’Esperance (pictured) and a young guest co-host chosen weekly from the local community.
