Becky Ruthven Continues Family's Legacy of Enduring Support
leader serving on our Board of Trustees, Annual Funds Committee, and IPR Advisory Council. Becky was named a Life Trustee after her Board retirement in 2021, and continues to be actively involved with Interlochen. Becky has been a leader through her philanthropy as well. She made a leadership gift to support the new Music Center, created the Becky Ruthven Annual Camp Scholarship, and recently, established the Becky Ruthven Endowed Scholarship for Camp and Academy music students studying classical voice or opera. Becky also became a Heritage Society member, with Interlochen being the principal beneficiary of her estate. This year, Becky updated her estate commitment, since her estate’s value had grown. The family legacy of giving will continue through Becky’s generosity, helping generations of students pursue their own creative journeys.
Visionary support for Interlochen runs in the family for Becky Ruthven. Her grandfather Alexander gave vital funding and other assistance to Interlochen founder Dr. Maddy in re- alizing his vision for what became the National Music Camp (now Interlochen Arts Camp). Her mother Beatrice, a professional opera singer, sang for Dr. Maddy’s weekly radio show in Camp’s early days. Becky grew up attending student concerts at Camp and years later became an engaged, passionate volunteer
“I have been a donor to Interlochen for several years, and I want to keep giving to Interlochen long after I’m gone. My endowed scholarship is intended to provide the opportunity for students to attend Camp and Academy, especially for those students who need the most financial support. A worthy legacy, I believe.” — Becky Ruthven
A Legacy of Transformative Impact
We thank the visionary supporters who have documented planned gifts to Interlochen Center for the Arts and Interlochen Public Radio and are pleased to list them as members of the Heritage Society. These gifts, when fully realized after their donors’ lifetimes, can take many forms: wills, charitable gift annuities, charitable annuity trusts, charitable remainder unitrusts, lead trusts, gifts of insurance, retirement plans, or other arrangements. All establish a legacy of enduring, transformative impact for generations of Interlochen’s young artists. We welcome 18 new members of the Heritage Society. Fifteen individual members (couples are counted as two individuals) are listed below; three donors chose to remain anonymous. For more information about becoming a Heritage Society member, please contact Kathleen Kasdorf, Director of Planned Giving, at 231.276.7637 or kathleen.kasdorf@interlochen.org.
Steve Hayden: A Lifetime Champion for the Arts
Steve Hayden’s connections to Interlochen were as multifaceted as his generous history of support. A Camp and Academy alumnus (IAC/NMC 62, IAA 62-64), a Life Trustee and former Board chair, and Arts Academy Commencement speaker, Steve was also an Interlochen donor nearly every year from 1993 until his passing in August 2025, just a few weeks before this publication went to print. Steve is pictured giving the commencement address to the graduating Interlochen Arts Academy Class of 2019. Many at Interlochen knew Steve for his kind and generous spirit and his visionary leadership, including his input on the branding of our Create Amazing comprehensive fundraising campaign and his leadership support for the construction of the Music Center. He will be greatly missed. Earlier this year, Steve made another generous commitment to Interlochen. In desig- nating a portion of his estate to Interlochen for unrestricted use, he provides Inter- lochen with the opportunity to use his gift, when realized, in the most strategic way. This ensures his support for Interlochen—like our fond memories of Steve—will resound in countless ways for generations to come.
