reality communism has nothing for the individual. Everything in communism is the State. The State owns everything in communism. In such a system there is no place for individual initiative, indi vidual ownership, individual freedom. World Catholicism is a threat to indi vidual liberty. Many contemporary think ers are more ’ troubled by the threat of the Roman Catholic Church to American liberty than they are about the threat of communism. The Roman Church comes in the name of Christ and in the name of morality and decency, but basi cally the Catholic Church is a political machine as totalitarian as fascism and communism. The reader is urged to secure a copy of Paul Blanchard’s book American Freedom and Catholic Power as a book of reference in this connection. No enlightened Protestant would deny to any Catholic the right to worship God as he pleases; but every sincere Protestant and every right-thinking Catholic ought to deplore the control of individual freedom by any religious organization. State Socialism is a threat to indi vidual liberty. Many Americans are alarmed, and rightly so, over the tremen dous gains made by State Socialism in America during the past several decades. Government interference in business and the building of an immense bureaucracy

has threatened the very existence of free enterprise, a system that has helped to make America great. Racial inequalities are a threat to indi vidual freedom. One of the “ hot-spots” on the American scene is the Southern area of the United Stales. In this area the American Negro does not enjoy the full rights and privileges granted the American White. That this is a serious situation all of us know. And all of us trust that the issue will be settled by peaceful means before civil war again flares in our nation. The Basis of Human Rights One of the bases of human rights and human freedom is the fact of human dignity. The Word of God tells us that man was created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26,27). The Son of God Himself became Man and identified Himself with His creatures (Phil. 2:5-11). All of this expresses in the clearest language the wonderful dignity of humanity. In spite of the fact that sin has entered to mar the image of God in man, yet every man is a potential candidate for resto ration. The Lord Jesus died for man’s sin (2 Cor. 5:21); the Holy Spirit has come to renew the image of God in fallen human nature (2 Cor. 3:17,18). The Word of God is another most im portant basis for the recognition of hu man rights. The Bible provides God’s standard of human relations as well as the record of His method of redeeming man from the guilt and consequences of sin. Read Zechariah 7:8-14 in this con nection. In the New Testament Romans 12 is a counterpart. The Freedoms That Belong to Mankind We think first of the freedom of wor ship. It is every man’s inalienable right to worship God as he pleases. Coerced worship is not worship. For any religious organization to command and compel religious worship in any set form or pattern is contrary to the liberty of per sonality. This is a basic human right and no man ought to let it slip beyond his grasp. The freedom of speech is another right that belongs to every man. There must be certain restrictions on this privilege, of course, when there is danger of in jury to others. But basically every man has the right to express himself, to argue his position, and to make his position known. Rob a man of this right and he becomes the slave of the State and no longer a free individual. But the most important and most won derful of all freedoms available to every man is freedom from sin (John 8:36). There is no freedom apart from captivity to Christ. A man is a slave of sin until he is a slave of Jesus Christ (Rom. 6 : 14-23). Do you have the bands of sin binding you? Why not come to the Sav iour and ask Him to deliver you? He will do it instantly, and for the first time you will know what it really means to be free.
