Persistence in the Waves How My Clients Inspire Me

I am so blessed to live in one of the most beautiful communities in America. Every day, I walk 3–4-miles, including a stretch along Ocean Boulevard in Corona Del Mar. It’s such a beautiful view overlooking the Pacific Ocean and beaches. One of my stops is at the edge of a bluff overlooking Little Corona Beach. I watch the waves crash into the rocky outcroppings. It may not be today, or even 10,000 years from now, but the waves will eventually win and reduce the rocks to sand on the beach. The waves remind me of my clients; they’re continually hitting the rocks day after day, but with their consistency and perseverance, they will win. Like the waves I see on my walks along Ocean Boulevard, something keeps pushing my clients forward; they never give up. I remember a client who was involved in a significant acquisition of some major assets from an oil company. Negotiations stalled because of what seemed like an impossible roadblock. Several of us were working on it, yet challenges still cropped up. We thought the deal was dead. The client was very passionate and kept pushing and encouraging us to keep working on it. Encouraged by his determination, we continued. After another week of 20-hour days, negotiations resulted in a deal worth 200 million dollars. “Deals will seem like they’re falling apart, but my clients don’t give up. They never stop fighting for their goals, and their persistence genuinely inspires me.”

Situations like this are common in mergers and acquisitions. Deals will seem like they’re falling apart, but my clients don’t give up. They never stop fighting for their goals, and their persistence genuinely inspires me. They hone their skills like athletes determined to win the gold medal. I love reading stories of Olympians: the struggles they have experienced and overcome, and their relentless pursuit of perfection in their craft. Like my clients, these athletes become masters through their perseverance and countless hours of practice. Michael Phelps trained for six hours a day, six days a week in preparation for his first Olympic appearance. Simone Biles trained for 32 hours a week with only one day off. Today, Michael Phelps has 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold.

Simone Biles has won the most gold medals in women’s gymnastics at a single Olympic Games with four gold medals. These Olympians make it all look so easy, but it’s through hours of extensive training that they accomplish these things. My clients are exactly the same when we’re negotiating. They have spent countless hours improving and honing their negotiating skills. Some have been doing this for 20–30 years. My clients inspire me every day to persevere through any challenge I face. They never give up, and neither will I. To learn more about what our team at Mailly Law can do for you, give us a call at 714-384-6531 or visit our website at MaillyLaw.com.
