A ppraisal
The Delaware Chapter of the Appraisal Institute sponsors April 21st event Professional symposium: “Place-Making” and Re-Imagining the City of Wilmington T
he most important de- cision in people's lives today is the “place” they choose to live. The City of Wilmington has a rich history and the talent to overcome any current negativity…so how can we transform Wilmington into a “place of innovation and shared value creation” that resonates with external and internal stakeholders? Please join Governor Jack Markell and distinguished panelists from Delaware State University, Wilmington Uni- versity, University of Del- aware, Delaware Business Roundtable, Johns Hopkins
gies that “reimagine urban neighborhoods” and cause so- cial entrepreneurs, the creative class, and companies to make Wilmington their “place”. • How corporate, govern- ment, academic, and educa- tional institutions can col- laborate on inclusive economic and social value strategies that create exciting new possibili- ties for Wilmington’s neighbor- hoods (CityLabs). Wilmington’s future eco- nomic growth can be optimized through an inclusive and en- gaged community strategy, energized by social entrepre- neurs, and led by collabora-
tive public/private/academic/ community stakeholders. Uni- versities and Innovation Dis- tricts will drive the country’s economic recovery, and Wilm- ington is perfectly. positioned to benefit from this national trend with multiple universi- ties and corporations in its immediate area. The Wilmington and New Castle County region is al- ready a “place of excellence” for banking, risk management, IT, corporate law, chemicals, healthcare, agriculture, and computer science. However, a more uplifting vision and brand for the City of Wilmington, highlighting economic inclu- sion, social entrepreneurship, and shared wealth creation, is critical to retaining and at- tracting new companies and talent. Our challenge to academia, corporations, the City of Wilm- ington, and regional commu- nity is; How can we build on all of Wilmington’s positive initia- tives and reintroduce Wilm- ington’s brand as a “place” of inclusive economic develop- ment, social entrepreneurship, healthy living, wellness, and shared value creation? Our answer is: Reimagining real estate, educational excel- lence, and innovation districts, are the currency for inclusive economic development and new jobs. Collaboration between our universities, colleges, health- care institutions, schools, and key stakeholders, will elevate Wilmington’s neighborhoods into “places of innovation” through reintroducing un- der-productive real estate as “cool lifestyle places” (CityLab Wilmington). Attendees will gain new per- spectives on how to create sus- tainable through inclusive real estate strategies that deliver economic and social value to all segments of the community. The Mayor of Wilmington needs to be innovative and inspirational lead our City to future greatness as a “place”. We have invited the 7 Mayoral candidates to our program for a “town hall” session.
