January, 2016 To All Our Customer's,

Porta Door was founded in the early 1960's' by my father Paul and my uncle Tony. It was conceived with the idea of making doors for their own small cabinet shop that specialized in custom built cabinetry and stairs. Through the years "Marlo Custom Craft", founded in the late 1950's, began producing simple raised panel doors for shops in an around the Stamford, Ct. area. The company grew to a point when the name was changed to Porta Door. Ever since, the company has evolved as a leading producer of doors, drawer boxes and cabinetry components serving the furniture and kitchen industry nation wide. I'm proud to have been able to continue the legacy of my Father and Uncle. I'm equally proud to enjoy the employment of my sons and nephews. Thinking way back in the past when my grandfather Pete, was employed by Porta Door, Time does fly,it's hard to believe, here we are, 4 generations later. We continue to invest and grow the company with the latest technology providing our customer's with the highest quality products and service. Please enjoy our newest "Porta Door Book" offering the widest variety of Door and Drawer Front styles, as well as a complete product line that will make your creations even better. Sincerely; Peter Romanos President and Owner

Product Standards

Porta Door cuts only "F.A.S." and "SELECT" grade materials as graded by the N.H.L.A. grading rules. All lumber is hand selected for consistency in quality. "Standard" grade material should be used on orders receiving stain other than white or a finish other than natural. The product will be matched for grain and color on a lumber run basis. There may be grain and color variations per piece. "Select" grade material, ensures grain and color matching per piece and throughout the order. A select grade of material is recommended for all clear, light and white stain finishes. Although select grade ensures grain and color matching throughout an entire order, the color may vary fromorder to order as different lumber lots are used. Select grade Cherry may have sap (white wood) on the back andmachined portions of the piece. Select Ashmay have brown patches on the back andmachined portions of the piece. Products ordered with veneered panels may have color and grain that is inconsistent with the hardwood framing around it. The veneered panel is not produced by Porta Door, and is impossible to ensure the grain and color matching of the product ordered. All hardwoods and solid woods, in general, shrink and expand due to variations in moisture levels fromone environment to another. All lumber used by Porta Door is kiln dried to 6-8%moisture content. Season and weather conditions cause movement in the hardwood product that is sometimes visible andmay be more visible in some than others. The factors related to the movement are affected by the size of the product (mostly the width), the environment, and finishing. Porta Door suggests for mitre constructed doors, the climate be as dry as possible and the temperature and humidity be controlled if possible. Mitred joints will open and close, sometimes up to 1/8", due to the properties of hardwood. Domestic hardwoods sometimes vary in color fromone lot to the next. Summer cut maple may sometimes be a little darker than winter cut. Maple color variations are due to the chemical dipping process used by the mills to reduce fungus growth. Cherry tans, just like human skin, if left inthe sun for a period of time. Cherry darkens with age naturally, therefore cherry replacement products will not match existing products. Red Birch andWhite Birch when finished clear or stainedmay cast ribbon effects darker or lighter than the surroundingmass. This colorationmost times can not be seen in its rawnatural and is not to be considered a defect. As nature provides no two trees to grow alike, it must be expected that a degree of color, grain and texture be expected on all products.

How to Order &Price

Step # 2 Round off door dimensions to the next higher even inch and determine the total square footage. EXAMPLE: Door size: 12 3/4" x 25 1/2" RoundUp: 13 x 26 13 x 26 = 338 sq. inches, divided by 144 = 2.35 sq.ft. Step #3 Multiply the square footage by the appropriate material price to determine the total material charge. Add design cost and any option charges to the total material charge. EXAMPLE: 2.35 sq. feet x $9.18 (RedOak) = $21.57 Add door design cost (4/4) (PRP15) = 8.10 AddOptions ( lip charge) = .95 Add (Polish Sand Face) = 1.00 TOTALDOORPRICE $31.62 Pricing a frame only is the same as pricing a door. However there Pricing a typical drawer front is the same as pricing a door, except there is a 1 square foot minimummaterial charge on drawer fronts. Youmust be sure to use the appropriate design cost in this guide. Things to knowabout pricing doors andDrawer Fronts Doors carry a 2 square foot minimumcharge. Drawer fronts carry a 1 square foot minimumcharge. Doors over 24" wide and/or over 48" high single panel in either direction carry an additional 20%charge overall. Remember pricing options if the product is not standard. Such as, wide framing on doors, hinge hole boring, etc. is one differnece in calculating the square footage. Always use 9" as the common width of the frame regardless of the actual size. Multiply 9" by the height to determine the square footage. Proceed with pricing as if a normal door.

WOOD&MOISTURE

All hardwoods shrink and expand with heat, humidity, lack of humidity and cold.    In humid and hot summer months hardwoods will expand, in  cold winter months  hardwoods will  shrink.    In  both  instances  hardwood material  can  grow or  contract causing joints  and  finishes  to  crack.  Expansion and contraction is most noticeable where perpendicular grain wood components are fabricated to parallel grain components.  The  issue with wood growing and shrinking can be controlled but not eliminated with environments that are temperature and humidity controlled   on a continues basis.  Porta Door goes through pain staking efforts to ensure the highest quality materials, we cannot, however, be responsible  for products that are not in a controlled environment.  It is best to make you clients aware of the ramifications of severe changes or lack of controlled environmental conditions.  Some of the effects of moisture.  Cope & Stick Products   Rails will expand beyond the ends of stiles.  Joints and Finishes will crack.  Solid hardwood panels will expand and crack frame joints.  Solid wood panels will swell on the body of each panel leaf and will not at the glue edge causing an panel waving effect. Mitered Products   Stiles & Rails will expand causing joints to open on at the outer edges on the product.  Stiles & Rails while contracting will cause joints to open on the inner portion of the stile and rail.  Doors may bellow in the midsection of the product.  Open joints of mitered products is more prevalent due to the nature of the joint.  Both Stiles and Rails will expand or contract at the same rate in the perpendicular directions, opposed to a cope and stick joint expanding or contracting in opposite directions.

PORTA DOOR USES THE FINEST MATERIALS,EQUIPMENT AND ADHESIVES TO CREATE AND PRODUCE A LONG LASTING  AND DURABLE PRODUCT.  COPE AND STICK DOORS ARE AVAILABLE WITH THE ADDED FEATURE OF TENONED  DOWELED JOINTS, THIS METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION WILL ENSURE NON JOINT MOVEMENT, IT MAY HOWEVER  CREATE OTHER EFFECTS ON MATERIAL SHRINKGE OR EXPANSION.  PRODUCT BELLYING, TWISTING OR WARPING MAY  RESULT FROM THIS ADDED CONSRTUCTION METHOD.
