Update From Our Executive Director

Special Year for Jazz on the Lawn It’s hard to believe that Callanwolde is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Jazz on the Lawn this year.I must admit that seven years ago, when I first became Executive Director, I was not a huge jazz fan, but after the first few concerts I became a jazz lover! Maybe it’s because the bands we select are very approachable. It also doesn’t hurt that the sound quality for all our concerts is unusually high for a little outdoor venue like ours. We’ve got some fun surprises this year, starting with our first concert featuring vocalist Karla Harris and the Joe Alterman Trio. We hope to coax some of the kids from our Art Scholars, who will be our guests that evening, on stage to sing with Karla. October 18, Joe Gransden will be bringing his 16-piece band and three special guest singers. If you’ve never been a guest at our outdoor concerts, you are missing out on an incredible experience. Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drink, which makes the evening very affordable. Bring chairs or blankets if you buy a ticket on the lawn. We also have VIP tables closer to the stage, which include onsite parking. More information is on our website, Callanwolde.org. -Andrew Keenan

Please check the registration receipt for a link to the class supply list. Code: DAP 01 Instructor: Chris Hall Location: Conservatory INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING ART HISTORY

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION THROUGH OIL PAINTING

This class presents Art History with storytelling and a thematic approach. Instead of presenting art through a chronology, each lecture will present art within a particular theme, such as art about portraiture, art about food and shelter, and art about nature and technology. By focusing on a theme for each class, we hope to show that there are ideas that we humans find important across the distance of time, space, and cultures. This class also gives participants the opportunity to make art based around each of these themes. Supplies: 11x14 drawing pad, Color pencils. Code: DAP 06 Instructor: Chris Hall Location: Library

This class is designed to guide students to find their inner artist and explore conscious and subconscious ideas – much like painters throughout history have found inspiration. The class is suitable for all levels and includes basic instruction for using oil paints as well as composition, subject matter, and concepts.
