Pottery & Ceramics

For all virtual and onsite Pottery classes, the tuition includes a $98 pass-through supply fee, which covers the cost of one bag of stoneware, raku, or Lizella earthenware clay (first bags of porcelain are available for an additional $5 cost), glazes, and 2,000 cubic inches of firing space . The supply fee does NOT include tools, students provide their own tools. Additional clay and tools may be purchased from the studio (credit card only). All work fired at Callanwolde must be produced in the Pottery Program studios (no outside work allowed).

VIRTUAL HANDBUILDING Virtual students have work-from-home and on-site glaze studio privileges only. No on-site access to wheel or Handbuilding studios.

In this virtual class we will be honoring Native American potters while exploring some of their techniques for hand building pottery. We will explore creating and decorating our pieces and learn some customs and traditions of indigenous peoples. Classes will meet via Microsoft Teams. Instructor: Lori Buff Location: Microsoft Teams

PAID STUDIO ACCESS

Basement, Handbuilding (indoors & outdoors) Studios. Students may opt in for additional studio access time between morning and evening classes. Paid Studio Access Hours: Hours subject to change Monday-Thursday: 12:00p-6:30p Friday: 9:30am-9:30pm Saturday: 9:30am-2:00pm Includes Sunday: 9:30am-2:00pm Students who do not opt for Paid Studio Access may use the studio without out charge 1 ½ hours after morning classes, 1 ½ hours before evening classes, and Sundays 9:30am-2pm. Monday-Thursday: 12:00pm-1:30pm, 5:30pm-7:00pm Sunday: 9:30am-2:00pm *NOTE* Evening Classes start at 7:00pm. Students that are not in evening classes must clear out of the studio before start time.

BEGINNERS HANDBUILDING

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2 HANDBUILDING - SODA FIRING

Handbuilding is the art of making ceramic forms without the use of a potter's wheel. Students will study the basics of building pots by pinch, coil, and/or slab built techniques, and learn the important safety guidelines and procedures of ceramics studio.

Students will learn more advanced, non-wheel techniques. Projects will emphasize exploring different surface design to compliment sculptural or functional forms. Prerequisite - Beginning Handbuilding. INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 1 HANDBUILDING - SCULPTING

This class will introduce students to the art of figure sculpting through a variety of forms including human, animal, and even imaginary. Early projects in the class will focus on details of our figures like faces and hands as we learn about basic structure and anatomy. Later projects will combine these details into full figure sculptures with poses and expressions that tell their own stories. Projects will all be guided by the instructor, but individual styles are also highly encouraged. Prerequisite - Beginning Handbuilding.
