you describe if he/she believes you don’t understand him/ her. The Little Things That Matter How do you demonstrate to those you manage that you understand? Start with the little things that matter. Ask employees to share stories that illustrate the cour- age, effectiveness and kindness of their co-workers. Of- ten, it seems that these things are simple and even unim- portant but they may also be the hidden reason that gives hope and even meaning to a job. It may seem an obvious thing when reading it on a page but no matter how basic it is, the positive influence and effect of practicing “the little things that matter” cannot be denied. Here are a few stories of some of the little things that mattered to a couple of Customer Service professionals. From M: S. always shows her concern by asking if I am ok, if she can help, and seems to always know when to give an encouraging word or warm smile. On bad days, her reaching out to me like that makes a big difference . From S, regarding her first day on a previous job: My first day at a job I had a few years back, a woman came up to me and said, “Because of you my best friend was let go!” I felt terrible but didn’t really know what to say or do. All I said was “I’m sorry.” Later that day, though, a different woman came into the office. She said, “Hi my name is Theresa, I’m glad you chose to work with us. I look forward to working with you.” Her cheerful remark and warmth made my day! This sort of support is probably given and received on a regular basis at everyone’s company. Certainly, finding ways to make a positive difference with those with whom you share your day is a good thing and will, no doubt, help others to feel that they are noticed, valued and appreciat- ed for the work that they do. If you are a manager, ask people to bring such stories to your next departmental meeting. The stories don’t even have to be about their co-workers. Just get them to share stories of kindness and cooperation. You will learn more about them and they will appreciate your interest in them. In our current era, it seems that in a lot of companies, showing care and empathy is not in fashion. We’re sup- posed to be tough, never admit mistakes, and just get on with the job. My counterargument to this trend is that hu- man beings have not changed so significantly that they no longer crave understanding and concern from those they live and work with. We still need to feel safe enough to speak up and share our thoughts and feelings. To build a productive and healthy workplace, leaders still need to demonstrate their interest and concern for their employ- ees. Everyone needs to show respect and concern for those they deal with. The absence of such concern will inevitably lead to a closed off, self-focused work environ- ment in which creativity, extra effort and teamwork are sacrificed while repeated mistakes proliferate because of
