TIMELESS TALKS THE BLESSING OF BELOVED ELDERS

“If there’s one piece of advice

The company you keep can change your life forever.

One of my greatest takeaways from spending time with older people is that they never give up. People of that generation go out of their way to help others and are always willing to listen and offer encouragement. They also realize that family is the most essential thing in life.

As someone who lives and works in this community, I’m never without opportunities to connect with captivating and colorful people. I’ve always believed you can learn a lot about life by spending time with people who have experienced it in ways that are vastly different from your own. Growing up, I always felt mature for my age, and I was in business for myself by the time I was 19. Throughout my life, I’ve always made it a point to hang out with older people to learn more about life and the world around me. Frank, an older mentor of mine who has since passed away, always said, “Wisdom comes from experience, experience comes from good judgment, and good judgment comes from bad.” With May being Older Americans Month, I’ve been contemplating how much my life and work have been influenced by the wisdom I’ve received from older folks. It was always a pleasure to chat with my wife’s grandmother, who lived to 95. From her tales of living through the Depression to working at a bowling alley as a teenager to saving money for her wedding, her stories were always deeply fascinating. They proved that hard work and a positive spirit will help us through anything. Above all, she was generous with sharing the lessons she learned in life and regularly expressed gratitude for the joys she experienced. These days, I’ve been spending time with my client and friend, George. He’s 93 and the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. He’s had extraordinary times in his life, including traveling to dozens of countries to help people through the church. As a teenager in the 1940s, he crossed the Atlantic in a steamship to visit his father. He has real estate, owns an RV park, and still drives independently. He also knows everybody . I’ll never forget having lunch with him one day when a young teenager came over to say hello and chat with him. It’s remarkable to consider how many lives he’s touched through his positivity and kindness — and the many ways he’s taught us all that strength comes from not sitting still.

I’d offer anyone, it is to ask older people questions and learn from them.”

Most significantly, the older people in my life are funny . I firmly believe laughter helps you live longer. I surely don’t know it all — especially how to relax and simply have more fun when I should — so I constantly strive to live by their example and better embrace the good times when they come. As an independent business owner for decades and a father of three, I’ve entered the phase of life when younger people come to me for advice and mentorship. If there’s one piece of advice I’d offer, it’s to ask older people questions and learn from them.

Happy Older Americans Month to George and everyone else who continues to enlighten and inspire us! You’ve enriched our lives more than words could ever express.

BLG Environmental Services Leads the Way Design-Built Done Right

Transforming your outdoor space is exciting, but choosing the right company is key to success. Trust and experience matter when selecting a landscaping partner to bring your vision to life, ensuring a smooth process and outstanding results. Should you hire a landscape designer and then find a separate contractor for installation? Should you work with a design-build company that handles everything from concept to completion? While both approaches have merits, working with BLG Environmental Services — which offers design and in-house installation — provides a seamless experience, cost efficiency, and better quality control. One Vision, One Team When you hire separate designers and contractors, miscommunication can lead to delays, unexpected changes, and inconsistencies. With BLG Environmental Services, the team that designs your project also builds it. This means your vision stays intact from start to finish — without compromises or last-minute surprises. Cost and Time Efficiency Working with multiple companies often results in fluctuating costs and scheduling conflicts. BLG Environmental Services streamlines the process by providing an upfront budget and timeline. Since our designers and craftsmen

CHICKS DIG IT Ella Evolves Into Jackie O.

Hello, and Happy May! It’s Ella with an important newsflash: I recently became one of the most famous women in the world! Let me explain. A few weeks ago, I was asked to give a book report at school. This wasn’t a usual presentation in class — I had to read a book about a famous historical figure of my choosing, dress up like them, and talk to the class as if I were that person. Well, I chose to be Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis! I was interested in learning about her, especially since she was married to one of our most famous presidents. Getting dressed up was so much fun! My mommy helped me pick out the outfit, and my grandma gave me a scarf. My daddy loved seeing me all dressed up and said I looked just like Jackie O. If you read this newsletter every month, you know that Daddy is a fan of the show “Seinfeld.” Well,

he said I reminded him of the episode when Elaine dresses up as Jackie O. to try to get a job at Doubleday, the publishing company where she worked after leaving the White House. That’s right; she worked in the book industry after her time as First Lady, which is one of the many things that fascinate me about her. I loved reading about Jackie O.’s life and learning more about her, and I love that my presentation made my mommy and daddy so happy! Until next time, I’ll be in my room reading as much as possible — even when I should be sleeping! It’s so much fun learning about interesting people and places and becoming more familiar with history and the world around me. If you’re looking for a nice way to spend time, you can’t go wrong with reading through a stack of good books! Who knows? Maybe someone will wear a costume and do a book report on me someday.

HAVE YOU HEARD THE GOOD NEWS? “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16–18 (NIV) “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from trouble.” PSALM 107:1–2 (ESV) “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” COLOSSIANS 3:15–17 (NIV)

Tips for Engaging Your Kids in a Nature Hike

STEP BY STEP Getting your kids outdoors to enjoy nature is a goal worth pursuing, but smartphones, video games, and social media have made it far more challenging in recent years. We celebrated Earth Day on April 22, and a nature walk is a great way to keep the appreciation for nature going. Planning games, creative projects, and other challenges to engage them during your hike can get kids involved from the start.

Help Your Kids Fall in Love With Hiking like Leafsnap help you identify plants using photos of their leaves or other parts. Additionally, the Arbor Day Foundation offers an online step-by-step guide at ArborDay.org for identifying a tree by its leaves. Keep the learning going by having your kids record their distance based on trail signs or a map app on their phones and calculate their average speed. You could also invite your youngsters to become cartographers, tracing the trail and surroundings on paper, including landmarks, rivers, and lakes. Older kids can add topographical information using their phones or an altitude app such as Altimeter or My Altitude. Hiking is a fantastic activity to help your kids appreciate the outdoors rather than their phone screens, but being in nature takes energy. Remember to pack snacks and a water bottle before you leave, or pack a favorite picnic meal to savor the rewards of exploring the outdoors!

Choose a trail that isn’t too difficult, and allow your children to wander and explore. If your children have a creative flair, encourage them to collect dried leaves, pieces of bark, seed pods, sticks, and other items to use in a collage. For adventurous kids, you can draft an age- appropriate list for a scavenger hunt to keep them from growing bored on the walk. You can include different insects native to your area, specific colors of leaves, and types of flowers, and you can even have them keep an ear out for different bird calls.

Challenge your kids to make a list of all the plants or animals they can identify while they walk. Apps
