2022: Connecting Africa’s ecosystem enablers to strengthen its innovation economy

Cross-border Payments and e-Commerce in Africa

AfriLabs partnered with Global Policy House and the E-commerce Forum to organize the first-ever high-level ‘Africa Central Bank Digital Currency Week’ focusing on Accelerating Economic Recovery through Alternative Financing and Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). On the second week of January 2022, we hosted a virtual event which was followed by a physical event in June 2022 in Kenya, where the global community discussed payments, how CBDCs and alternative sources of finance can play a vital role in boosting recovery and economic growth in Africa, including Decentralised Finance (Defi), Cryptocurrency, and Green Financing.

The 2022 Africa CBDC Week explored the current landscape around Payments, Cross Border Trade, Digital Trade, and E-commerce, and a deeper exploration of the CBDCs, Alternative sources of Finance and Sustainable Impact Investments.
