Showy Milkweed

Asclepias speciosa looks like Common Milkweed, but its pinkish-purple flowers have longer, tapered petals that are covered with fine hairs. The fragrant blossoms look like small crowns! Showy milkweed may be better suited in garden settings because it is less aggressive than Common Milkweed. It enjoys full sun and can handle many soil types. All Asclepias are excellent nectar sources and food for the larval stages of Monarch and Queen butterflies. The flowers attract many butterflies and hummingbirds.

Pale Indian Plantain

Also known as Arnoglossum atriplicifolium, Cacalia is found on the edges of woods and in fields. It has a majestic, vase shape, and is incredibly durable as it is rarely beaten down by rain or bent over by the weight of its blooms. It has large, white flower clusters that arise on a stately, 4-8ft stalk which towers majestically above other vegetation. Blooms mid-July- mid- August, good nectar food for pollinating wasps.

Sweet Indian Plantain has striking triangular- shaped leaves. Because this plant is uncommon throughout its range, it should be cultivated more often. Another common name of this species is False Indian Plantain. Sweet Indian Plantain can be distinguished other species by its triangular leaves; its flowerheads also have bractlets at their bases that other species lack.

Helianthus pauciflorus enjoys drier soils and full to part sun. Due to its rhizomatous tendencies, Showy Sunflower can get aggressive in small area plantings which means it may not be a suitable species for smaller home landscape projects.

However, in a prairie setting, Helianthus pauciflorus flourishes and offers beneficial relationships to a variety of pollinators.

Round-headed bush-clover is a large and upright midsummer to early fall perennial with interesting white and magenta flower clusters. Its deep roots can replenish nitrogen in soil and help to prevent erosion. This perennial is great for slopes, naturalized areas, native gardens, pollinator gardens, and wildflower gardens with lots of sunlight and soils that drain well.

Carex appalachica is a fine textured grass native to the Appalachian Mountains northward through New England. The foliage and overall dimensions of this plant resemble Carex pensylvanica, although C. appalachica is a clump-forming species rather than spreading. C. appalachica flourishes on well-drained slopes and is particularly effective when planted with other woodland plants.

Carex rosea is a petite perennial sedge that forms 1’ mounds of narrow shaggy foliage. The leaves are deep green and semi-evergreen. It also has great landscape potential as a woodland groundcover or lawn substitute.

This part shade-loving plant produces beautiful sprays of lacy, cream-colored flowers in late spring to early summer. It is very floriferous when it's in bloom, completely covering the deep green foliage. Goatsbeard is similar in appearance to Astilbe in the garden, but it is more drought tolerant. 'Chantilly Lace' will be shorter if grown in full sun, closer to 24" tall, than if grown in shade or a sun- filtered area, where it will grow to a height of 30-32".

This shade perennial can best be described as a giant version of the classic 'Jack Frost'-with a twist. The huge 9-10" leaves overlap dramatically at the base giving it a shape similar to the snail delicacy escargot. Overall, the foliage is circular from a distance. The leaves have a heavy silver overlay with vivid wide, dark green veining pattern. From mid to late spring, baby blue, forget-me-not type blossoms are held in clusters above the foliage.

This unique blue hosta is popular among hosta collectors and makes a very nice specimen in the home garden. In spring, the narrow wedge-shaped leaves are bright glaucous-blue and they hold their color well. As the season progresses, they turn more blue-green. The heavily rippled leaves are of good substance, displaying some slug resistance. This hosta has a lovely cascading form that is displayed to best effect when planted on a ledge or in a container. Lavender flowers are produced on arching scapes in late summer to early fall.

‘Jeana’ is an exceptional garden phlox renowned for its impressive flower show, tall sturdy habit, and pollinator- friendliness. Cuba Center in Delaware, the nectar-rich flowers of ‘Jeana’ attracted more butterflies - Eastern Tiger Swallowtails were especially plentiful - than any other garden phlox in their study.

Leave the grass sanding over winter to enjoy its motion and texture in wind and snow, and to provide nutritious seeds for songbirds.
