Blephilia ciliata , also called Ohio horsemint, occurs in dryish open woods and thickets, clearings, fields and roadsides. A clump-forming, mint family member that features mostly unbranched, square stems which rise to 30" tall. Blue-purple, two-lipped flowers appear in late spring to mid-summer in several tiered, whorled, globular clusters in an interrupted terminal spike, with each cluster resting upon a whorl of fringed bracts. Swamp Rose-Mallow

Swamp rose mallow is a 3-8 ft., water-loving shrubby perennial with numerous sturdy stems arising from a single crown. It will grow in full sun or partial shade and is salt tolerant. It flowers from July through August with 4-5 in. white or pink flowers. The flowers last only for one day, but they appear consistently until the end of the season. Blooms provide nectar to hummingbirds and a variety of insects. Plants host caterpillars of gray hairstreak, painted lady butterflies, skippers and several moths.

Calico Beardtongue

Penstemon calycosus is a herbaceous perennial deserving of greater use in the garden because of its cultural adaptability. Calico Beardtongue tolerates a variety of conditions from filtered shade to full sun and well-drained, moist to dry soils. The snapdragon-like flowers ranges in color from light violet to purple. Plants can grow 1-3’ tall and roughly 2’ wide. The foliage is lanceshaped, semi–glossy, medium green, and has finely saw-toothed edges.

This is a thornless or near- thornless rose with blunt leaflets and smooth stems. Five-petaled flowers are pink to whitish. The shrub is 2-6 ft. tall with a dense, mounded habit. Salvia azurea , commonly called blue sage, is a clump- forming perennial that typically grows to 3-5’ tall (shorter if pruned).
